Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead alloy toy, known as a whirligig or buzz wheel, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period (1600-1800). The whirligig is broadly circular in plan being formed from a sheet of lead alloy. The edges of the toy have a rough crudely set serrated edge. It seems likely that this edge was created with a knife or pair of shears and was set out using a form of compass. The evidence for this is a crudely scratched but very regular incised circle; this is present on one face only. This circle has subsequently been used as a marker or guide to gage the depth of the cuts which form th…

Medieval strap end with a zoomorphic terminal. Remains of the single iron attachment rivet can be seen at the broad end. This end separates to accomodate the strap material. The strap end tapers towards the zoomorphic terminal which is preceded by a waisted portion. The design on the terminal resembles an animal head similar to early medieval types and is depicted using ridges and grooves in an abstract design. The reverse is plain except for a groove denoting the join of the thinner strap attachment sheet to the main body.
