One of these is a relatively unabraded sherd from a bowl with traces of blackening. 2 foot rings. 3 body sherds. The range of fabric and slip colours suggest that this material had been imported from several production sites in Gaul. Roman, 1st to early 3rd century. 56g. Pottery fragment of a finial in the form of a bird head made of black basalt ware with a dark purply-black manganese glaze and a fine buff-coloured fabric throughout. There are similar examples of figurative bird heads on black basalt ware vessels, dating from the turn of the 18th century, like two examples illustrated in Morley-Fletcher & McIlroy (1984) on page 289, Nos.9 & 14.

Pottery strap handle fragment from a pitcher with orangey-grey oxidised exterior surfaces and light grey reduced interior and multiple mica inclusions which suggest that it is made of Lostwithiel ware. From the form of the handle in section, with its C shape with protruding side flanges, it looks similar to those illustrated in Austin (CAJ No.28, 1989) on page 148, Fig.4.5, Nos.86 & 89, which are dated from the 15th to the 16th century.

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy finger ring, with a thin D-shaped section. The ring has been inscribed on the inner surface of the band. There appears to be three or four words on the internal surface. Much of the lettering has be badly worn away and filled in with metal corrosion product. The third word could read lotte or lolle, but again it is unclear. There is a small blob of gilding surviving on the internal surface of the band, which could indicate that the ring was once gilded. The ring has a joint line still clearly visible, on both the internal and exterior surfaces of the band. The m…

A copper alloy mount. The mount has an openwork design. In the centre of the mount there is a man’s head. Below his chin there is an upside down fan and above his head a circular projection. Either side of his head, there is a large flower motif. A sub-rectangular shape joins all of these motifs together. The hollow areas at the side of the head give the mount its openwork design. The reverse is undecorated. On the reverse the remains of two spikes survive which would have held the mount onto either wood or leather. The mount appears to be complete apart from the broken spikes. Much …

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy one-piece strap end, probably dating to the Early Medieval period, 5th century AD.400-500. The object is formed from a plate of cast copper alloy. The object is flat and tapers outwards from a stylised zoomorphic head terminal. The terminal resembles earlier Anglo-Saxon type strap ends. There are two notches, one on either side of the 'head', which resemble eyes. On the front surface of the plate, between the eyes there is a small engraved ring and dot motif. The main body of the strap end then widens towards the riveted end. In the centre of the strap end there ar…
