Two adjoining handle fragments from a vessel which dates to the medieval period, or mid thirteenth to sixteenth centuries AD. The fragments are ceramic and are incomplete. In plan the smaller fragment is sub-rectangular while the larger fragment is trapezoid shaped, with uneven sides which flare out to a wide base. The wide base is the point where the handle would have been connected to the main body of the vessel. The object is a probable scabbard chape thought to date to the Medieval period or fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. The object is made of sheet copper alloy and is incomplete. In plan the chape is sub-trapezoid in shape. The chape is made from a sheet of copper which has been rolled. It is not possible to see how the sheet is secured due to the amount of damage. The object is an incomplete cast copper alloy disc brooch of the Tutulus type (see Hattatt, R 1987. Brooches of Antiquity. Oxbow: Oxford, p.185 – 186). The brooch dates to the Roman period or late second to third century AD (175AD – 300AD). In plan the object is sub-circular, while in profile the object is sub-trapezoid shaped.
