A copper alloy knife or razor handle in the form of a three-dimensional leg and foot. The foot is wearing a sandal represented by ribbed moulding running down the centre of the foot, encircling the ankle and on either side of it extending to a flat sole underneath the foot. The foot appears to be wearing a sock represented by herringbone patterned incisions. These herringbone pattern incisions continue up the leg, covering the calf and end in a notched circumferential moulding. This moulding appears to represent the top of the sock. Above this the leg is smooth and expands, ending mid…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a 1st century Roman plate brooch, dating from AD50-150. It is cast from copper alloy and is decorated with coloured enamel. The front of the brooch has a small circular hole at the centre where there would have originally been a protruding knop - this may have been cast separately and therefore has been lost from the brooch. The decoration on the brooch is in the shape of a sun with radiating curved arms. It is similar to the 'leaf garland' decoration found on similar early plate brooches from France (as cited in Hattatt 'Ancient Brooches and other Objects'). The enamel in the…

Late Medieval or early post medieval copepr alloy button, 10mm wide and 5mm thick. The button is in a fair condition with a green patina and weighs 1.71 grams. It has a rectangular form and a triangular section, giving it the appearance of a squashed pyramid. It has possible decoration including a border but this is obscured by corrosion. The reverse has a rectangular shaft, 10mm long, emerging from its centre which appears to widen to accomodate a loop but has snapped off at this point.

Copper alloy fitting, possibly from a harness. The object is likely to be medieval. The fitting has a circular flat plate attached to a hinged arm with a small loop at the end. The fitting appears to have functioned as some sort of swivel as both the arm and terminal are pierced. The front of the plate is decorated with a crude cross with a dot in each quadrant (three of these dots are blocked but the fourth is a hole). On the reverse there is some iron staining. The object weighs 2.54g and measures 27.7mm in length, 11.5mm in width and 5.2mm in thickness.
