A copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in the form of a swimming duck, dating to the 2nd to mid 3rd century AD. The body of the brooch is oval in plan and convex in section. Remnants of white metal coating survive on its upper surface. The neck and head of the duck, represented by an oval sectioned extension, protrude from one end and is broken. There are two C-shaped grooves on the body of the brooch representing wings and a circular sectioned cell at the tip of the tail. These would have originally contained enamel. The underside of the brooch is hollow. There are two semi-circular lugs a…

Lower part of the leg of a cast copper alloy vessel of probable Post Medieval date (AD 1500 – AD 1700). Length 37mm, maximum width 36mm and maximum thickness 12mm. Weight 56.31g. The leg has a flat bottom and when standing in a horizontal plane it would have been at an angle of about 70° to the plane. The outer face of the leg has a central longitudinal moulded rib flanked on either side by a slightly concave area. The inner surface is flat. The surfaces are corroded and there is no evidence to suggest that the vessel has been used for cooking. Fair condition.

Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The object is probably a harness mount, made from cast copper alloy. The mount appears to have been bent, forming a right-angle at the mid point, this seems to be accidental rather than purposeful. The base of the object is flat and undecorated, and it is the upper face that is moulded and varying in thickness. Starting with one terminal, this has a rectangular framed loop as the terminal. This is one of two terminals, which form the thickest portions of the mount. The next integral component next to the terminal loop is a less thick, pointed oval shape in plan, which has a small circ…

The function of the object is not known. It is composed of a cast copper alloy shell, with iron within. The copper alloy shell is an inverted triangle in plan, and has a ‘^’ shaped profile. On the fold of the upper edge there is further moulding, which forms a rectangular lip. This lip has a hole within. Each face of the object has a sub-trefoil moulding along the edge. This is further defined by grooves on the surface, the central groove is double stranded. The copper alloy has a dark green/grey coloured matte patina. The underside of the object is nearly completely filled with ir…
