Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete wrought copper-alloy Iron Age La Tène III Nauheim derivative brooch dating to the 1st century BC/AD. Typical of this one-piece brooch type the chord is internal, although the spring coils are difficult to discern (see notes, below). The pin would have been formed by the continuation of this coil; it is therefore now missing. The bow is oval in profile and tapers towards the foot, its sides flattening as it narrows. It extends into the catchplate which survives well. The brooch is undecorated.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, probably a Hod Hill/Aucissa variant, from around the mid 1st century AD. Unfortunately the artefact is worn with losses and abrasions to the bow and head. The bow is wide at c. 4mm, widening slightly at the head. It features a number of incised lines: four according to the image provided (see notes, below). At the head the brooch is bent up and round on itself to form a thin cylinder with central notch. This open cylinder would have taken an axis bar around which the pin would have been hinged; both elements are now missing. The arran…

An unusual lead alloy seal matrix. Face is circular, with tapering handle, circular in cross-section, which has been broken at the bottom of the suspension loop; the small piece of metal protruding to the side at the top may have been one side of the suspension loop. Device: a very crude wheatsheaf or possibly fleur-de-lys of three upright elongated pentagons joining at a short horizontal stroke, below which are visible three further short lines. Across the widest part of the pentagons a diagonal line which appears to end in a short streamer or ribbon; two similar streamers are visible…

A fragment from a Roman cast copper-alloy spoon consisting of its bowl and the beginnings of the handle. The bowl is circular in form, with a diameter of 25mm and a circumference with an abraded section. The bowl is undecorated. It is shallow, being only circa 4 mm deep. The handle is seemingly of circular section and is broken close to the bowl; the majority of the handle is missing as a result of old damage. The line of the handle is continued as a rat-tail junction with the bowl. It would have terminated in a point. This type of small round-bowled spoon is known as the 'cochlearia…

A thin walled body sherd of earthenware (possible of Severn Valley Ware) pottery probably either dating to the late Roman (150 – 410 AD) or the Medieval Period (1200 – 1500). The sherd is very worn and abraded and is probably from the body of a storage jar. The fabric is relatively soft and powdery with a number of angular and sub angular quartz and brown coloured ironstone inclusions. The fabric colour is a mid buff orange and the outer colour is a lighter mid orange. Due to the smallness of the sherd the diameter of the vessel cannot be estimated. It measures 19.7mm x 13mm x 8.5m…
