Copper-alloy ‘locking’ buckle. The buckle frame is rectangular, with a thin flange (now mostly broken away) along the outside of the outer edge. The thicker part of the outer edge has a transverse grooved pin rest. The sides of the frame are raised and drilled to accommodate the ‘locking’ arm, one end of which passes through the long tubular base of a T-shaped copper-alloy pin. Outside the frame, the ‘locking’ bar curves but is then broken. Originally this arm would have bent right round to rest on the flange. ‘Locking’ buckles date to the 14th century.

End fragment of a Roman cosmetic or surgical implement, probably a spoon or spatula. Such objects were used for applying make up as a cosmetic and ointments in medicine. The fragment consists of a disc, 8.8 mm in diameter with the remainder of the shaft attached. There is a disc shaped rib in the shaft shortly before the break. Similar examples are illustrated in Crummy (1983, 60; 1897-1907). Such artefacts were in use throughout the Roman period.

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy harness pendant. The pendant is of a sexfoil type with a central circular field, decoraed with blue enammel. Three raised points in the centre of the field may represent a fleur de lis, although it is quite worn. The pendant's suspension loop is situated above one of the six knops. The reverse is plain and undecorated. The method of suspension and the general style of the pendant suggests a medieval date of 14th century. Some similar examples are illustrated in Cherry (1991, 26; 19) and Clark (1995, 67; 71) although these are both octofoil in shape.
