Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published
A buckle frame cast in copper alloy and tin coated. It is oval and slightly curved in profile. The inner and outer edges are bevelled, with a shallower angle on the reverse. The front has dense transverse grooves. A faceted moulding on each side housed the missing bar, which was iron (as the orange corrosion product testifies). The pin, too, is missing. The size of the buckle suggests that it was for a shoe. Comparable examples dating between c.1660 and c.1720 can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 97ff.).
