Fragment of a cast copper alloy trumpet brooch of Roman, first or second century date (AD 43 – AD 200). Length 13mm, width 12mm and maximum thickness of bow 5.2mm. Weight 3.89g.
The fragment consists of the upper part of the bow and the head. The head incorporates two rearward projecting lugs that form a deep recessed cavity to accommodate a spring (now missing). The cavity is about 7mm in width and 5mm in height. Each lug has a small circular perforation to take an axis bar. Both of the perforations are filled with iron corrosion and the surfaces within the recess have iron staining…
