Object type: BIRD FEEDER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Published
Cast lead/tin alloy incomplete aviary or cage bird food or water trough with flat bottom, and flared top half with moulded band and rim. The body of the vessel has been pushed out by the finder after having been flattened in the soil, so that it is now semi-circular in plan. There is a small perforation in the middle of the back of the vessel, which was probably used to suspend the feeder within the cage.
Read (1988) illustrates and similar example on page 98, number 606, which is dated to the 15th century.

Cast lead trade weight or net weight, a flat rectangular prism in profile, with an integral attachment loop with a perforation hole of about 7 mm in diameter. Biggs & Withers (2000) illustrate a similar weight on page 31, No.67, which is probably medieval.
Bailey (1995) also depicts a similar…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Published
The object is a fragment of a Medieval buckle dating to the mid 13th to mid 14th centuries. Ottaway and Rogers (Ottaway and Rogers 2002 Craft, Industry and Everyday Life: Finds from Medieval York) illustrate similar buckles, Figure 1466 No. 14298 and 14303 for example.

Object type: NAIL CLEANER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy nail cleaner of Roman date. No exact parallel could be found for this object but its general form is comparable to Crummy type 2a and a date range of mid 1st to early 2nd century is therefore suggested (Crummy, 1983). The top section of the object consists of a decorative upward-pointing crescent. This gives way below to a collar comprised of two decorative mouldings, each with three horizontal bands, and separated from each other by a narrower waisted section. The blade is leaf-shaped, reaching a maximum width of 12.2mm at the shoulders. It tapers gently to the points, …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
A copper-alloy connector to join two straps. The artefact consists of two heavily corroded sub-rectangular sheet plates, set parallel to each other with a space in between, and joined together by two small copper-alloy rivets (one at each end). Each of the plates measures 19mm long by up to 7.8mm wide and approximately 0.3mm thick. The edges are heavily corroded and both plates have a black corrosion product which may represent decayed tinning or silvering. The total thickness of the artefact is 3.9mm and the weight is 1.51g. It is probably of 13th to 15th century date.

Object type: BELL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete bell of medieval (probable late 13th to early 15th century AD) date. The top half of the bell and the loop survive. The body is semi-spherical and has been made from sheet metal. It is corroded around the edges and its surface has a black corrosion product which suggests that it was silvered or tinned. The suspension loop has been pushed through a hole in the top and is made of a folded piece of flattened copper-alloy wire. The ends of the loop have been splayed outwards in order to prevent it from falling out. The object measures 12.9mm wide by 7.9mm high and weighs 0.73g.
