Two fragments / pottery sherds from the base of a highly decorated, wheel thrown, shallow bowl or dish probably dating from the late medieval or early post medieval period (1500 -1650 AD). These two sherds fit together along a relatively recent break. The fabric of the pottery is relatively hard with a number of rounded and sub-angular quartz, grit, and mica inclusions. The fabric colour is a mid grey, the outer surface is a mid orange brown and the inner surface is a mottled darker grey. This multi-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of earl…

A small cast copper-alloy fragment, probably from a Roman bracelet. The fragment does not feature any terminal elements. Decoration is naturally limited to the obverse face. This is divided into sections by regularly spaced opposing triangular nicks along the edges. Within each section thus delineated is a ring-and-dot motif. This latter is created by a circular groove leaving a circle, in the centre of which is a punched dot. With such a small fragment it is not possible to state whether this design would have continued along the totality of the brooch. The artefact is worn wit…

A post-medieval cast lead alloy (with copper?) token, which depicts a fleur de lis in relief on the obverse. All the voids formed by the main design contain a pellet. The reverse is plain apart from the initials TC or TG, which have been written back to front. The initials are probably those of the issuer. Lead tokens are thought to have been produced as a substitute for low denomination currency at times when it was in short supply.

Point, length 43mm, width 14mm, thickness 5mm. The artefact is a broken and only the tip remains. From the slightly rounded tip the sides gently expand outwards giving the impression that in its original form the artefact may have been long and slender. There is a riser on both the left and right side, thus giving it a rhombus shaped cross-section, this shape makes it more likely to be a fragment of a weapon, rather than a knife. Similar styles of points are found on medieval arrowheads, together with roman and Anglo-Saxon spearheads, but because of the slender slope of the bl…
