A Medieval copper-alloy buckle and plate (1270-1450). The buckle has an oval frame with a pronounced triangular lip where the pin would rest. The buckle has a square plate attached; the corrosion makes it appear as if the plate is integral to the buckle. Near the inner edge of the plate is a roughly circular perforation for the pin to attach. Within this perforation is a small lump of iron corrosion ?the remains of the pin. There are two copper-alloy rivets (still remaining) one located on each corner of the outer edge of the buckle plate for attachment to a strap. It is similar …

A Medieval copper-alloy horse harness fitting (1066 - 1500). It is a link or strap-adjuster from a horse harness, probably a bridle. At one end is a circular loop (diameter: 17.28mm) attached to a bar with a D-shaped section, the bar then expands (from 7.55 to 12.69mm) to form a rounded collar before it expands again (to 15.77mm) to form another loop. The object is broken across this loop. It is probable that after this second loop the other half of the object would mirror the first half so that it forms a double-looped link with a large central circular perforation. The reverse of th…

A Medieval copper alloy spoon handle (probably 13-14th century). The spoon is incomplete with a small fragment of the bowl still attached to the stem. There is a line of silver solder running roughly parallel with the break, suggesting that the bowl broke in antiquity and was repaired. The stem is circular in section and there are traces of rust visible indicating that the stem has an iron core running through it. Egan (1998:248) suggests that the iron core added strength and stability to the stem and is common in spoons dating to the 13th-14th century. Towards the knop the sectio…
