Sheet copper alloy snake’s head strap end with punched detail on upper sheet and then soldered onto lower sheet which is plain, making it hollow within to take a leather strap. Likely to have been imported in relatively modern times from the East where the snake motif is more prevalent. The only comparable example that the recorder can find is as a terminal to an armlet or arm band made from sheet brass from Chinese Turkestan illustrated in Gerlach (1971) on page 76, Plate 38 No.19. 19th-20th century

Cast copper alloy incomplete scabbard hook decorated with a moulded running man within a penannular frame with expanded terminals. There are four moulded ridges reminiscent of foliage above the frame and these are echoed in the terminal of the hook, just above the knop. The subject and style of the decoration appears to be very similar to an example of a quillon-dagger haft which Read (HBOF) illustrates on page 196, No.1382, which he dates to the 19th century. Bailey (DF3) illustrates scabbard hooks from Napoleonic bayonets on page 62, Nos.1-10, which are dated from the late 18t…

Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman T-shape hinged brooch with one wing extant and the head of the bow with an applied loop or hook. The wing is tubular with a copper alloy wire or spigot protruding from inside it at the centre of the two wings where the hinge would have been, now missing. The back of the head has been hollowed out to allow for the hinge movement. The wing is incised at its end with two lines that run parallel from the front of the wing to the underside but do not carry on to the top of the wing. Hattatt (2000) illustrates a similar example on page 304, Fig.163, N…

Probably one of the external plates from a three-piece composite medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. Sub-rectangular in shape with a trapezoidal terminal. Rectangular with rounded corners in section. The plate is decorated with zig-zag wrigglework which overlaps to form lozenges. At the attachment end there are three perforations: the central hole is larger than those which flank it. There is a small triangular notch from the central perforation going into the body of the strap-end. This arrangement of perforations, together with the incision, is typical of composite strap-ends…

Flint knife. The knife is roughly triangular in plan, with retouch along the two long sides. There are two main flake removals from the dorsal surface. There is some cortex at the proximal end on both the dorsal and the ventral surface, however it is not clear whether this is recortication, especially since there appears to be a clear striking platform covered in cortex. The flint is a pale blue mottled colour.

A small, simple pair of copper-alloy tweezers. Made from a thin sheet bent double with a small loop. The straight arms are now slightly misaligned. They sit at an acute angle of approximately ten degrees. The ends turn in at an angle of approximately 135 degrees. As Pritchard (1991, 383) notes, such a construction method is characteristic of Romano-British tweezers as well as medieval ones. In the absence of surface decoration it is difficult to date simple tweezers. However, as this pair were found on a known deserted medieval village (DMV) site a medieval date can be suggested.
