The object is an incomplete buckle. Margeson illustrates a similar buckle (No. 137) which is dated to the 14th century. It is made from cast copper alloy. In plan the buckle is a d-shaped buckle frame, however only the loop and one side of the frame remains. The off-set strap bar is missing, but is indicated by the terminal of the loop. The breaks of the loop are not recent. The buckle appears to be heavily abraded and has lost its original surface. The surface is corroded. The buckle measures 26.93mm long and 16.1mm wide. It weighs 1.9g.

Tao Kuang T'ung Pao cash of the Canton Mint of Kwangtung Province. This Chinese coin dates to the time of the Opium war which took place in 1839. Although the import of opium to China had been banned by the Qing government in 1796, the British went on and even increased its export to China. To try to stop this the Imperial Commissioner attempted to confiscate and destroy the illegal opium in Canton, however his attempts were largely unsuccesful.

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex

A copper-alloy thimble, probably dating to the 16th century. The thimble is tall and rounded with a rounded top. The indentations in the thimble appear to be large circles. The indentations have been arranged in a spiral. This thimble has been cast as one piece. The thimble does not thicken around the base and there is no rim, but the base of the thimble is very worn and damaged. The copper alloy is in fact very thin. It is worn and the metal has lost much of its original surface. Several cracks have appeared in the copper alloy, where the metal has worn thin.
