Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire

A lead circular seal matrix, design of beaded branch splitting into three on reverse, originating at the broken lug at the top. Part of design has been scraped off. Device of a regular compass-flower style quatrefoil with a pellet in the space made by each angle. Parts of the quatrefoil show evidence for the design originally being outlined by a double line (i.e., the quatrefoil is actually two concentric quatrefoils).

The object is made from a cast copper alloy. It is possibly a tool which has an integral tang, which may be of a Roman date due to the patina and style.
The largest portion of the tool is a square-sectioned tang which gradually tapers to a blunt point. The second portion is a solid conical shape in profile which tapers to a blunt point, which is abraded, and therefore may not be the original terminal. The tang protrudes from the base of the conical portion. The surface of the tool is slightly pitted, but otherwise has areas of a well developed light blue/green patina

A complete but bent pair of copper-alloy tweezers, probably dating from the middle Early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period (Geake 2001, p.75). The upper three quarters of the arms are narrow and are decorated with a repeating pattern of closely-spaced transverse ribs. The arms flare outwards at the triangular bottom section where on both sides there is a pattern comprised of lines of punched ring and dots (the rings being very faint). The bottom edge of both sides of the tweezers has been folded back towards the centre so that it forms an angle of ninety degrees with the rest of the arm. A…
