Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy incomplete flat axe with the beginnings of a stop ridge and flanged sides dating to the Early Bronze Age c.2000-1700 BC. The blade end of the axe is corroded but the angle suggests that it may have had a crescentic blade. Both faces of the axe are decorated with straight lines punched into the axe after casting, about 5mm in length, and about 1mm apart, in what is referred to as a 'rain pattern'. The axe is 113mm long, 52mm wide at the blade end, 23mm wide at the butt end, 10mm in thickness and weighs 186.03g. Comparable examples of decorated flat axes fro…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy, vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, plain back other than a raised midrib and suspension loop intact at top of same. Device: the bottom 70% of the device area of the matrix is occupied by a shield which has a very small area of blank face around it. On the shield is a beast rampant; it has the body of a heraldic lion, but the head appears to be that of a man wearing a large, floppy hood, hence the creature may be intended for a manticora rampant. Above the shield, in the remaining blank area, a star with six wavy limbs (estoile). The device area is separated from …

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy strap fitting, which could be from either a belt loop, a personal strap fitting, bridle fitting or non-load bearing harness fitting. This decorative fitting most probably dates to the Late Iron Age. It is however also possibly that this object dates to a later period. It is formed of a figure of eight loop with a third loop set at 90° between the two. The three loops appear to have been wrought together by a bronze smith, rather than being cast as one piece. The three loops were probably made individually and then soldered together. The joins would then have been hea…
