Record ID: CAM-680703
Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, c. 6th century AD. The lower portion of the brooch has a collar with a faceted field below. The brooch has an animal head terminal with prominent raised eyes and rounded nostrils. Separated by three bands of double lines at the junction with the foot. The reverse has an elongated over-turned catchplate. There are remains of tinning on the catch plate, evidence to suggest that the brooch was completely tinned at one time. The brooch has been broken in antiquity.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A narrow rectangular buckle plate, wrought in copper alloy. The object survives in two pieces. Both the front and back plate of the buckle plate survives, but they have broken apart at the hinged end. The break on the hinge looks very worn. Both plates are very thin (0.58mm) and rectangular in shape with decoratively shaped corners. There is one single rivet hole, which goes through both plates, near to the open end of the buckle plate. The rivet does not survive. The front plate has been decorated with an engraved geometric pattern. The engraved lines appear to have been filled with s…

It consists of a sub-rectangular frame, with a circular loop below it; projecting from of the short edges of the buckle is an integrally cast decorative plate with a central circle and a flanking decoratively shaped area either side of it. This has in the centre, on both edges, a zig-zag edge of three small points; on either side of this is a semi-circular cut-out. There is an iron rivet on either side of the circular aperture. Copper alloy brooch fragment, supporting arm type (Mahndorf type). Upper half only, missing spring, pin; damaged pierced lugs; abraded surfaces. A struck/ hammered silver groat of Edward IV (diameter: 26mm; thickness: 0.7mm; weight: 2.79g), probably minted in his first reign between 1461-1470 AD. An unusual coin with quatrefoils either side of the neck and fleurs on the cusps, including a fleur stamped over a probable ‘E’ representing York. However, on the reverse, the mint reads ‘CIVI/TAS/LON/DON’. This may indicate that a mistake may have been made as it was a die intially prepared for use at York, but then the ‘E’ was disguised to enable the moneyers to transform the coin into a London mint.

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast bronze flat axe (length: 74.9mm; width at blade: 40.3mm; thickness: 11mm; weight: 115.67g). A small, crudely made and uneven axe with gently sloping sides to the blade. The blade is not flanged. The artefact has a high metallic content and would have been made in an open mould (possibly of sandstone), therefore explaining why the surface is no uneven and slightly pitted. The butt of the axe has tapered to a narrow point but the side is thick. The axe is worn and in a poor condition. Similar examples are illustrated in Peter Harbison's 'The Axes of the Early Bronze Age in I…
