Silver sixpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), second issue (1561-1582). Dated 1582 over shield on reverse. Clipped possibly later “after 1662 when the older ‘hammered’ coinage continued to form the bulk of the circulating currency until the 1690s, by which time it was mostly in a poor state. The Great Recoinage of 1696-7 converted this into the modern ‘milled’ money, but a decision to exchange all old coins for new at face value, provided that they had not been clipped within the ‘inner circle’ of their designs, unleashed a final epidemic of clipping.” (Besly, E…

A large lead balancing weight. Although the remains of an iron handle running through the centre of the weight may suggest that it is a steelyard poise. The base is roughly circular, 35 mm in diameter and flat. The weight tapers outwards and upwards from the base for about 26mm before flattening out into a gently cone shape on top. The iron handle is heavily corroded. But survives as a blob of iron on the point of the cone. It is 40mm in height, at its widest it has a diameter of 44mm. It weighs 354g (12.5 oz). The plough has left a number of scars on the surface of the weight.

A copper-alloy unidentified object. The artefact has been cast and appears to have some sort of iron rivet running through the copper alloy plate. The iron staining has spread half way up the artefact. The artefact appears to represent a humanoid head and so the head forms part of the shape of the artefact. The ‘neck’ is long and almost oval in shape. It extends down form the head. No-body is evident. The detail of the face has been engraved into both surfaces of the flat plate. The two ‘faces’ are slightly different. The artefact appears to be completed, but it is unclear what…

Unidentified fragment of decorated sheet copper alloy, the edges of which are curving. It is probably medieval but the metal is very thin. The broken edges are jagged. Much of the original surface is missing, especially on the reverse. On the decorated side there is possibly a black letter A. Either side are areas filled with rocker arm decoration. To the right of the A is a curved edge of a letter, possibly a M. To the left of the A is another letter, although it is not obvious what it may be. Measures 25x14x0.3mm. Weighs 1.37g.

A Neolithic flint flake with re-touch, dating from 4000-2200 BC (length: 25mm; width: 28.5mm; thickness: 11mm; weight: 7.03g). The bulb of percussion is missing from the ventral side as the flint appears to be broken (as it also seems to be at the opposite end). However, there are still numerous radiatting ribbles or 'lunettes' running down the flint's length, therefore indicating where the bulb would have been. There are flaking scars down the left side of the ventral. Pressure flaking on the ventral created numerous flaking scars on the left side working edge of the dorsal. Ther…

Unidentified copper alloy object 38mm long and mostly D-shaped in section. It weighs 7.35g. Max width 9mm, min 6mm, thickness 4mm. In shape it is four rounded and slightly squashed circular shapes on top of one another. The reverse is flat. The patina is dark green with a purple-brown colour showing through. Both ends appear to have been cut, though this could be from the mould. At first glance, this looks rather Bronze Age but its flat reverse suggests it is later, and probably post medieval and a mount of some kind.
