Copper alloy medieval figurine of an angel with a 5mm long, 3.5mm diameter shank at the reverse, below the shoulders and off-centre. The figurine itself stands 42mm to the top of its head and 49mm to the tip of its wings. The wingspan is 63mm and the reverse of the wings are slightly concave. The patina is mostly intact and dark green. Lighter brown patches occur on some of the more prominent areas, and are perhaps through wear? Most noteably on nose, cheeks and head, the shoulders, hands and feet, and on the end of the shank on the reverse. There are also patches on the wings and wing…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy medieval harness pendant with traces of gilding remaining on one face. It is "pear-" or "tear-drop" shaped with a hoop turned through 90 degrees at the pointed end. One face is convex (the reverse face is concave) and has traces of gilding, though most of the patina is missing. Two tiny rivet holes c.2mm diam are c.10mm below the hoop at either edge - one is so near the edge it has gone through it. On the reverse, the surface seemed to have flaked away and there is very little patina left. The metal is purpley-brown in colour and the object is 43.5mm long and 21.5mm wid…

Single sheet copper-alloy strap end. The strap end is 51 mm long and 22 mm wide. A slight groove separates the attachment end from the rest of the body of the strap end. The attachment end has a circular attachment hole (5 mm in diameter) in the centre. The strap end is decorated around its edges with punched circles. The reverse is undecorated. The strap end has been bent out of shape and and appears to have been broken at one end. The break has been worn smooth, making it likely that this break occurred in antiquity. The strap end is medieval in date.

A square looped handle at the top with small sphere containing the remains of an iron ball. There are three holes at the top near the looped handle (one of them presumably due to damage) as well as the double-holed gap on the underside, where there also appears to be very faint sunburst decoration. The crotal bell is in a poor condition with a heavily corroded surface which is partly due to iron corrosion from the ball inside. Part …

The key aperture is sub-oval with a slight t shape and is 6 mm wide at its maximum width. At the other end is an internal vertical saeptum indicating that the mechanism had two spring strips. The mechanism is now missing. The bottom of the padlock is broken and is missing a large portion of the casing here. Iron harpoon. The harpoon has a socketed shaft with the remains of two iron rivets in situ. The socketed shaft is formed by rolling the flat wings over. The length of the socket is 91mm. The shaft is relatively thick, rectangular in section 13mm by 10mm, and 440mm in length. The shaft only tapers at the point where it meets the barb. There is one barb to the harpoon, which is square in section and 48mm in length. The tip has been broken.
