Object type: NEEDLE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
This object is likely to be a needle. Although now bent, it is essentially about 7cm long, with a diamond section: there is a point at one end and a hole at the other. Before the mass-production of steel, it is possible that some needles were made of copper alloy: it may alternatively be a bobbin for lace-making, or suchlike. It is probably medieval or post-medieval in date.

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper-alloy shield-shaped pendant mount, 20mm long and 17mm wide. The mount is very worn and corroded and is missing some edges. It shows the three lions of England, one above the other with each decreasing in size towards the base. The lowest lion still has traces of its original surface and shows areas of gilding and red enamel inlay. The lions of England were the royal arms until 1340, when they were quartered with the arms of France. The three lions design may have continued despite this change. The mount probably dates to the 13th or 14th century.
