A collection of Roman pottery collected over some years. Mainly 2nd-3rd century and includes some of the more long-lasting/commonplace forms which run through the whole of the Roman period. It represents the type of regional pottery available for home use at this time, such as domestic cooking vessels, storage pots and fine ware drinking vessels.
Also collected with this group is a fragment of mosaic floor consisting of six white tesserae cemented together, measuring 2.8mm by 3.4mm. Not recorded here, but seen by the recoredr at the finder's house, were a number of box flu tiles, sugge…

Copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. Expanded (trumpet-like) head with void for the missing spring, and central swelling on the bow, with a transverse line and collar above and below. There would probably have been a swelling at the foot, although this is now damaged, but there is a transverse line and collar above the foot. Pin missing, catchplate broken. Length 47.7mm, width of head 9.0mm, weight 8.14g.

Copper alloy Iron Age brooch, La Tene III. Bilateral spring with four turns and an internal cord. The undecorated bow is slightly thicker at the top and sub-circular in section, with a groove running down its back. The catchplate is solid with a single circular piercing. The pin is present, and complete. Length 38.9mm, width of spring 9.0mm, weight 4.66g.

Hammered silver penny, York mint, heavily clipped so that virtually nothing of either obverse or reverse inscriptions remains. The obverse shows the facing crowned bust of the king, with a small K to the right of the hair/crown. Nothing in the inscription is legible, but one saltire stop is visible. The reverse shows a long cross with a quatrefoil in the centre (denoting York mint), and three pellets in each angle. Again, nothing of the inscription is legible. Max diameter 13.9mm, thickness c.0.6mm, weight 0.66g.

Hammered silver Scottish twentypence of Charles I. Obverse reads CAR D G SCOT ANG FR & HIB R (Charles by the Grace of God, King of Scotland, England, France and Ireland), and shows the King's head facing left with XX (for twenty pence) behind. The reverse reads IVST THRONVM FIRMAT (justice strnghtens the throne) and shows a large crowned thistle. Probably the 2nd coinage (1636), possibly the 3rd (1637-1642). Hammered silver penny of Robert II of Scotland, 1371-1390, minted in Perth. The obverse shows the crowned head of the king facaing left holding a sceptre with a cross at the base of the handle and reads ROBER[TVS RE]X SCOTO, mint mark cross pattee. The reverse shows a long cross with a 5-pointed mullet in each corner, each mullet having a cinquefoil in the centre, and reads VILLA [DE] PERTH. Copper alloy pendant probably a horse harness fitting. The pendant is a flat elongated triangle shape with a circular terminal at the bottom two corners of the triangle. The pendant tapers up to a perforated lug at the top which is turned at ninety degrees where the pendant would have hung from a mount attached to the harness or strap. The pendant is very worn but there is evidence of gilding and a pattern on the surface although it is impossible to see the pattern clearly. The back is undecorated. The pendant measures 51mm in length and 33mm in width and weighs 6.61g.

A copper alloy Hallstatt brooch related to Hull's Class Lx (c.700-400BC). The brooch has a curved, bulbous bow (with a hollow beneath the bow typical of class Lx) and at each end there are three projecting circles each engraved with concentric circles around a central dot (length of each 'arm' 32.68mm). There are two pierced lugs with an axis bar (?iron) for the spring (neither the spring nor the pin are present). Copper-alloy press-moulded object, possibly dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. The surface of the object is curved and depicts two greyhound dogs, one standing up behind, and another lying down in front. Both appear to be on some sort of bed or sledge. Five sherds of Roman pottery. All fine grey reduced wares - three rims, including one from a large cooking pot or jar, (all smallish rims - probably 1st or 2nd century), one body and one base sherd. In addition there is a single body sherd of a coarse reduced fired ware with ill-sorted fine to coarse grains of quartz and sparse ironstone and ?limestone - probably Roman. Weight of the five Roman sherds 135g; weight of unidentified ?Roman sherd 14.5g.

A copper alloy late Saxon strap end. Single D sectioned plate which splits at attachment end in two. There are two circular perforations at this end. The body of the strap is separated from the attachment plates by two horizontal mouldings. The body of the strap end tapers and ends in a zoomorphic knob. The underside of the strap end is plain. The strap end measures 42mm in length and 11mm in width.

Cast copper alloy mount with integral pointed lugs. This mount is circular in plan and semicircular in section. It has a diameter of 18.16mm and weighs 3.36g.It is decorated with three moulded raised lines that rise above each other so that the profile of the mount is ‘stepped’. Where each step occurs, there is a circular band of punched dots. Complete copper alloy Roman seal box probably dating to the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD. This seal box is circular in plan with a diameter of 18.36mm, a height of 7.12mm and weighs 5.18g. Circular in plan and semicircular in section, this button has a diameter of 22.02mm and weighs 6.97g.The front of the button is decorated with a crude design of punched circles. Cast copper alloy medieval thimble. This thimble is 20.5mm long with a rim diameter of 19.84mm and weighs 9.08g. It is domed in shape with a thickened, plain rim. There is a split in the rim, that continues for about 2mm into the body of the thimble. It is hard to say whether this is damage, or whether a deliberate split or notch in the rim has lead to the crack in the body because this point was weakened.
