A superb example of an 8th century, secondary, silver sceat, series Q, type 1 with bird reverse. See Metcalf, 1994, Thrymsas and Sceattas in the Ashmolean museum, Oxford, plate 23, number 383. Diameter: 11.42mm, weight: 0.91g. This series is widely distributed in East Anglia, especially in West Norfolk and into Suffolk. It is interesting to find that it has made its way down into Essex, though this keeps its distribution north of the Thames.
