Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy framed zoomorphic razor handle in the form of a griffin's head. The neck of the griffin splits into two to clasp a wide flat iron blade. There are still remains of the iron blade between the shaft, and the width of the blade is 4mm at the break. There appears to be one possible iron rivet at the upper end of the neck securing the blade, however on other examples this rivet is normally positioned further down the shaft, in an area that is now missing on this example, hence the possible rivet here may just be localised corrosion. Razors such as this example would ha…

An incomplete and very worn copper-alloy pin/nail head with a fragment of shaft surviving, measuring 18.2mm in total surviving length. The head is now globular and roughly cirular in shape measuring 12mm in diameter. It is unclear if it was originally circular in shape as the side do look quite angular, it may therefore have originally have been cuboid in shape with the corners of the cube cut off, it is now almost impossible to tell due to the extreme wear on the head. The base of the head appears to taper towards the shaft and there may even be a faint trace of a circumferencial c…

A cast copper-alloy cooking vessel leg and foot, measuring 51mm in length, 31mm in width and 21mm in thickness. The rest of this cooking vessel is missing due to an old break. The foot has five longitudinal raised mouldings, it is waisted where it joins the leg, and there is then a swollen part, again with five rounded mouldings. The back face of the leg is concave, the front face rounded. Cast copper-alloy cooking vessels were used between the second half of the 13th century and 1600, this leg is most likely to be from a cauldron or skillet.
