Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete cast copper alloy bow brooch which has old breaks. Length 41mm, width 16mm. Assuming that the brooch was symmetrical, the very thin bow, of which only the lower part survives, would have had four regularly spaced vertical flutes and a protruding lug at each lower side. The plain leg, which has a slightly concave profile at either side, narrows sharply and terminates with a moulded knob above which is a slender transverse rib. The majority of the catch-plate is intact. Patches of tinning are evident on the front of the brooch which is suffering from bronze disease.

Six fragments from at least two Late Bronze Age copper alloy swords. They appear to form part of a metalworkers' hoard. One fragment measures 100.78mm by 31.85mm and is a maximum of 6.29mm thick. The other is 104.2mm by 40.44mm and is a maximum of 6.73mm thick. Ther…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A circular lead object, circular and flattish. 23mm in diameter. Fairly worn and the detail is difficult to discern, but grooves that radiate from the centre are evident. There is a bulge on the reverse. Originally recorded as a medieval brooch, the photograph of the front may show a raised centre to the front. It is hard to know if this is any kind of finished object, or if it is a piece of metalworking waste.
