Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Orange flint debitage. A small thick sub-triangular flake with flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. The finder notes this as a rare appearance of a distinctive orange-brown flint or chert, a material only hitherto recognised as the material selected to make the largest and possibly earliest scraper reported from the vicinity. Probably chipped after it was discarded. Suggested date: possibly Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 28.7mm, Width: 25.5mm, Thickness: 8mm, Weight: 5.35gms

Orange flint with brown shiny patches, possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder, probably with large flakes removed overall by multangular hard hammer working. The finder notes this as a rare appearance of a distinctive orange-brown flint or chert, a material only hitherto recognised as the material selected to make the largest scraper to be reported from the vicinity. An early date is speculatively advanced. Suggested date: possibly Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Length: 46.6mm, Width: 48.4mm, Thickness: 12mm, Weight: 20.89gms

Orange flint with iron-stain spotting, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A chunk with opposed concave faces and with scars from the probably unidirectional removal of long parallel flakes using a now restricted striking platform. The staining may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Height: 45.5mm, Width: 44.5mm, Thickness: 29mm, Weight: 49.26gms

Grey flint with cortex, burnt debitage. A small thick flake with thick cortex on its dorsal side and a lightly rippled ventral surface. White patina accumulated over this surface, suggesting it endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. One end is recently broken and the other reveals a crystalline appearance arising from burning, which may have embrittled the broken end. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 37.1mm, Width: 22mm, Thickness: 12.5mm, Weight: 10.03gms

Orange iron-stained flint, core, as kindly identified by the finder. Flint debitage, kindly identified by the finder as a possible graver. A tiny flake with parallel narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a convex ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect forms a hooked point. White patina suggests the object has subsequently endured exposure to a calcareous environment. Brown flint scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. A thick oval flake with broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curving edge extending about half way round the object. The tan colour may arise from the selection of a distinctively tinted stone; there is no trace of iron spotting or rolling. Flint debitage; the finder kindly suggests a function as a possible knife. An oval flake with three large flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb and platform at the broader end of the ventral surface. Banded tan and white flint with cortex, possible backed blade. The finder kindly suggests this may be a side scraper. A thick flake with narrow flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a tiny bulb at the narrower end of a concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, with cortex retained on the opposite long edge to permit pressure to be brought to bear on the working edge. Grey-brown flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, debitage. An oval flake representing the first strike from a water-rolled flint cobble, with a tiny striking platform at one end and a slightly concave ventral surface. A dense white patina on the exposed surfaces suggests the flake was subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment.  A short [14mm] extent of very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims the surface deposit on that side and shows a very short episode of reuse, and this exposed surface is not patinated, perhaps suggesting the object was d…

Orange iron-stained flint with cortex, scraper. A thick dentiform flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. A curving notch was formed by retouch of one long edge executed from the dorsal aspect, retaining cortex to permit pressure to be brought to bear on that working edge. The orange surface colour suggests the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. The finder kindly identifies this tool as a Clactonian notched scraper, by reference to Butler, C. 2005, Prehistoric Flintwork, Tempus. Suggested date:…

Dark grey flint debitage. A thick flake with broad flake removal scars on it dorsal side and an undulating ventral surface with a single flake trimmed by hard hammer strike from the ventral aspect. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect occurs at the narrower end, leading the finder to suggest use as an end scraper. A dense white patina accumulated overall, suggesting a long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina is disrupted by more recent edge-on chips. Orange iron-stained flint core fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Dark grey flint with re-forming cortex spot, core. A thin chunk with scars from bipolar flake removal, and with a grey misty patina over all struck surfaces suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This is removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, probably indicating the reuse of a previously discarded item. The retouch was not itself patinated, so the object may have been incorporated into a sealed context shortly after the final reuse. Dark grey-brown flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, sickle fragment. Curved flake with opposed concave and convex long edges and a rounded end, and with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a rippled flat to slightly concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows the curve of the concave long edge. A broken end may signal the end of the primary use, if it was not always a short-bladed tool. A creamy misty patina then developed over all struck surfaces, later to be removed by limited short abrupt retouch executed from the …

Pottery. Dark grey hard reduced fabric with sparse calcareous inclusions to length 2mm, probably externally burnished or very thickly sooted; the inner surface has spalled away. Body sherd from a probably handmade vessel with a concave outer surface suggesting the swing of a vessel wall. The robust fabric tends to point to a later Iron Age or Roman date, though as the finder points out, early Anglo-Saxon wares might be similar in composition and construction. Dark grey flint with cortex pebble, possible plough pebble. Over half of a water-rounded flint cobble with a single flat face which is rounded at its edges, smoothed, and bears unidirectional scoring. The finder kindly suggests a role as a sharpener. Dr Kevin Leahy regards these objects as plough pebbles, which would be mounted on the leading edge of the wooden mould board to reduce its erosion during use, the markings on the protruding ‘working’ face of the pebble arising from long use until its displacement. The heavy plough was an introduction of later Iron Age to Early …
