Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.

The figurine takes the form of a seated woman, her head resting on her left hand with her right arm crossed in front of her. She is clothed in long robes with a shawl covering her head. The base has a deep conical hole projecting into the centre of the object with long cracks to either side perhaps as a result of the manufacturing process whereby the clay was pressed into separate moulds and then two halves were joined together. It is made from fine pipeclay, which is unusually dark grey in colour rather than the more typical white.
Although pipe clay figurines do appear in the Roman period they are rare as stray finds and typically quite different in form and style from the present example. Instead this is more likely to be of late medieval/post-medieval date when the tradition of small pipeclay figurines came back into fashion again. According to Duco (2012) manufacture began in the late 15th century and continued into the 16th century in the Netherlands and England, but particularly in Germany, and these earlier figurines tend to be religious in nature to be used as votives or pilgrim souvenirs. The tradition sprang up again in the 17th century, but these late figurines tend to be more secular in nature and often quite bawdy. The present figurine seems likely to reprsent a saint or religious figure based on her pose and attire, although there are few clues about her specific identity, and therefore it may plausibly belong to the earlier tradition.
