A copper-alloy Roman nummus, c.364-367AD, RESTITVTOR REIP reverse type, House of Valentinian, likely Valens. Mint: Lyon. LRBC 274 The RESTITVTOR REIP nummus was struck at the start of the reigns of Valentinian I and Valens for a very short time. Eastern mint specimens are scarce, but do turn up occasionally. However, this the first example of a Lyon piece that the National Finds Adviser has ever seen from a British site.

A copper-alloy core of a contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Valentinian I, c.364-367 AD. Reverse: RESTITV-TOR REIP, Emperor standing facing holding labarum and Victory on a globe. Traces of an added white metal coating are visible on all surfaces. This coin appears to copy RIC IX no. 7a. Nummi were struck of this type, but they have an officina letter after ANT for the mintmark (c.f. A contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Valens, c.364-378 AD, with a reverse type used by Constantius II (337-61) at Arles, c. 357-61. This is an irregular copy of a siliqua with copper-alloy core, plated surfaces and irregular types. Reverse: The legend VOTIS/XXX/MVLTIS/XXXX (letter V's inverted) within a wreath. For reverse type, see RIC VIII, p. 223, nos. 253-4 Plated copies of siliquae or not uncommon, and it is also not uncommon for forgers to combine types of different emperors. This is a fine example.
