A sherd from the body of an early Bronze Age vessel, dating to the period c.2350-c.1200 BC. Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.  With thanks to Carlotta Marchetto, Oxford Archaeology East for identification help.  Length: 30.16mm, w…

A copper-alloy medieval bowl dating AD 1050-1300. The vessel is made from a sheet of metal hammered to an omphaloid shape. The rim is bent outwards and set at a right angle to the body of the bowl; it is moderately damaged on one side by modern disturbance due to deposition into the ground. The rim bears two repairs made in antiquity; the interventions interests two opposite portions of the rim. The smaller and better preserved consists of a rectangular strip of metal, which has been folded over the rim and moulded to the curvature of the body; it has been then secured by a lozenge-sh…

Three wheel-thrown ceramic sherds of probable Oxfordshire colour-coated ware (two body sherds, one rim sherd), dating c. 100-400 AD. Rilling marks are visible on the internal faces, while the outer surfaces have a 'pimpled' appearance. Combined weight; 25.9g.

A complete copper-alloy vessel mount or lid handle in the form of a bird, probably a duck. It has a pointed oval shaped body that is D-shaped in section with flat underside and rounded back. At the tail there is a narrow transverse band of incised decoration comprising multiple diagonal grooves, presumably intended to represent folded wings. The rounded tail has notches around its outer edges to signify feathers. The neck is short and oval sectioned and leads to a rounded head with projecting beak, which flares towards a flattened end that has a slight transverse groove. On the unders…

An early Anglo Saxon copper alloy bucket mount, probably a rim mount and of Jean Cook type A3, that is bifurcated with animal head terminals (Cook, 2004, 37). Such buckets were mainly in use in the 6th century, buckets with bifurcated mounts are most common in the 'Anglican' North-east. This bucket mount has a central rectangular vertical shaft with an upper terminal which narrows and curves backwards , presumably to fit over the upper rim of the bucket. This upper curved edge has vertical grooves along its edge. Below this terminal and at the other end there are two circular rivet …

An incomplete cast copper alloy tankard handle of later Iron Age date. It comprises a flattened copper alloy plate for attachment to the vessel that is heavily pock marked, has a dark brown patina and is very slightly curved in profile. This measures 20.38mm in surviving height, 16.54mm in surviving width, and 2.81mm in thickness. On the exterior surface can be seen three quarters of a deeply incised ring and dot motif that consists of a large circular incision measuring 7.52mm in diameter and approximately 1.1mm in depth. A copper-alloy miniature vessel. It measures 48mm in height and has a rounded base; it is generally globular in shape with a very short neck and two parallel integral loop handles. It measures 35.4mm in diameter at its widest point and has a rim diameter of 23mm. There is a small irregular roughly circular hole through the base, which appears to have been created due to wear rather than being an intentional original feature of this vessel. The vessel has a black patina and areas of active powdery green corrosion. There are about 20 parallels on the PAS database as of 2011.It wa…

The lower terminal and fragment of the shaft of a cast copper-alloy Roman jug handle, measuring 51mm in total surviving lenght. The complete terminal is oval, approximately 32mm in length, 23.2mm in width and 10mm in thickness. The back face is slightly concave and curvilinear to accommodate the body of the copper-alloy vessel, to which it would have originally been soldered. The front face of the terminal is rounded and moulded to depict a forwards facing female head with a triangular head dress, the tip of which tapers into the centre of the handle shaft. The face is almost round w…

A heavy bronze casting of quasi-cylindical form. This object, in the form of an animal's head, was made as one of a pair to fit on the ends of a rod forming the drop-handle of a vessel or box. It is 18mm long and oval in section, being 11mm diameter in the shorter (vertical) axis and 14mm diameter in the longer (horizontal). It is pierced longitudinally by a hole which tapers from 6mm gauge to 3mm. The 'front' end of the mount or fitting represents an animal's head: the oval drum is cut away in the upper part, over a length of 5mm from the end, so as to represent the tapering snout an…

An incomplete copper-alloy possible vessel mount. It is likely that this mount would have been lozenge shaped when complete, it now measures 32mm in surviving length and 25.5mm in width. It is slightly curvilinear and projecting from the complete terminal and the one surviving central corner there are rounded globular knops. There is also a longitudinal central groove running down the front face. On the back face there is a very small trace of what might be a white solder material , however too little remains to be certain. If this is solder this is the likely method of attaching …

A cast copper-alloy vessel leg and foot, measuring 62mm in total length the leg is 16mm in width 16.3mm in thickness, it has a triangular cross-section. It tapers towards the foot which consists of an out turned foot, with a moulded ridge across the 'ankle.' The foot is rounded on its upper face and measures 14.9mm in length, 25.5mm in width and 14.4mm in thickness. This fairly delicate cast leg could be from a variety of vessels, including an ewers or skillets and is most likely to be medieval or post medieval in date.

Solid cast copper-alloy leg from a vessel, perhaps a skillet or ewer. The leg itself is roughly triangular in section, slightly bow-sided, deeper than it is wide, and flat at the back. It tapers in thickness from 24mm at the top down to 14mm at the 'ankle'and in width similarly from 18mm to 11mm at the ankle. The foot is shaped like a pointed boot, 24mm from heel to toe and 14mm wide. The entire leg was attached to a copper-alloy vessel, the thickness of which remains brazed to the top of the leg, though all surrounding sherds of the vessel body itself are broken away and lost. An incomplete cast copper-alloy decorative pouring spout in the shape of a dogs head, in very good condition. The curvilinear terminal, which would presumably have fitted into a vessel or leather container is incomplete due to an old break. The surviving spout measures 46.51mm in length and 22mm in width.
