Object type: BEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete shale or possibly jet bead. This bead is circular in plan and measures 19mm in diameter, its sides flare outwards in its centre. One side of the bead is a lot thicker than the other measuring 11mm, the other side is only 6mm thick. The wider side is most likely to have been the front face of the bead. This bead has a circular perforation which is off centre and worn, it measures 7mm in diameter. This bead is a rare discovery in very good condition. It is early Bronze Age in date and similar to a shale bead discovered in Wiltshire (Annable and Simpson 1964, 117, no 498), exa…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete probably copper-alloy pennanular ring with a banded gold sheath, more commonly known as 'ring money.' It measures 14mm in diameter and has a sub-circular cross-section, measuring c4mm in width and c4mm in depth. Due to its small size this example could be a half unit piece. The ends of the ring are flat and are 1.5mm apart. A copper-alloy core is suggested as the sheath is cracked on one of the exterior faces near to one terminal. Within in this crack a dark brown colour can be seen, this is likely to be dirt. Lighter transverse circumference lines can be seen around t…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete fine roughly leaf shaped all over worked bifacial point or dagger, measuring 120mm in length and 50mm in width with a thickness of 9mm. The flint is mainly medium grey in colour and merges to dark brown/black at the butt. It is probably a Beaker period/early Bronze Age dagger and is believed most likely to be genuine, however there is a possibility that it could be a Brandon 19th or 20th century product.

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper alloy blade fragment from the end of a small socketed axe or possibly a chisel. This fragment measures 23.9mm in length and 33.3mm in width and is 13.5mm thick. The break demonstrates that one face was very thin (1.2mm) compared to the other (3.9mm). However, flanging on the top of the sides resulting from hammer sharpening the blade, shows the axe to have been finished for use prior to breakage. The edge of the blade is lost to corrosion there is also extensive pocking on the outer, though not inner, faces. The fragment has a dark green patina except for the area of pale gre…

Object type: SWORD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper alloy blade fragment from a late Bronze Age sword, measuring 65mm in length, 31mm in width and 7.9mm thick. It is markedly curved longitudinally, probably as part of the fragmentation process. The cross section is lenticular. All the edges and the breaks are severly damaged and eroded, probably due to long standing presence within the plough soil. There are a number a linear relatively recent possible plough grazes on the blade faces. There are frequent corrosive invasion pock marks on both faces but mainly near to the blade edges. This fragment is patinated medium brown to d…

A complete bronze socketed and looped axehead, length 84mm, width at blade 42mm. This axehead is plain with a standard double mouth moulding. The socket has one corner missing due to a slight miscast, there are two internal ribs extending about half way down the socket. The blade edge is severly blunted due to recent agricultural ? Damage, there are also recent plough marks on both faces, these are particularly numerous on one face. The deep green and brown patina is chipped off in places, especially in the area of the blade edge, exposing a pale green invasive corrosion under the surf…

A bronze small complete shouldered socketed axehead. This axehead has a rectangular socket with a small angular collar. There is a small loop with casting hollow in the ajoining part of the body. The body narrows from the socket end and then sharply expands with concave shoulderd which then gently expands, with slightly concave sides, to the cutting edge. The cutting edge is extremely worn and rounded. This axehead is patinated medium dark green with small patches and pocks of pale green invasive corrosion. Shouldered axes are extremely rare in England and NW Europe, although several o…

The blade end of a bronze incomplete socketed axehead including part of the socket. This blade is quite narrow with straight expanding sides but is without obvious blade expansion. The cutting edge is rounded and blunt, though severely affected by corrosive pitting. There is a small casting void in the socket. The surface colour is mainly pale green due to invasive corrosion products, some areas do have better surface survival and are patinated darkbrown. This may be part of an Armorican socketed axe, also refered to as 'Breton axes', a type which are usually non-functional and may hav…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy fragment of a slightly flanged tang and blade, probably from a tanged knife. The tang narrows towards the butt end and is flat apart from slightly raised edge flanges. The edges of the tang are squared in section. The junction between the tang and the blade is badly damaged, there is a suggestion of two small side notches on one edge but these are probably due to damage. The blade is mostly missing, and bent at the break, which may be recent. The butt of the balde is elliptcial in section and the buttend is missing due to an ancient break. Condition otherwise is quite p…
