A base sherd from a Roman mortarium. It has a dark grey, almost black colour on the outer surface, with a grey brown inner surface, with the core being a sandy light brown colour. The fabric is hard with numerous mica inclusions throughout the sherd. The fragment has small to medium inclusions of quartzite and sand, on what would have been the interior of the mortarium only. Length 47.54, Width 38.5mm, Thickness 7.75mm, Weight 19.4g.

A fragment of a ceramic Roman mortarium, dating to AD 100-350. It is a fragment of the flange and the wall. It has a beige core with an internal and external orangeish cream surfaces; the fabric contains frequent red-brown ironstone inclusions. The interior surface of the wall has moderate dark grit inclusions. Between the flange and the internal wall there is a low rounded bead; the flange is flattish with two even-spaced concentric ridges on the front face. A fragment of a Roman Mortaria made from Oxford colour coated ware , dating to the period AD 50- 410. The fragment is broadly triangular in shape and includes part of the foot ring, a low pedestal-like ring formed on the base of a vessel to enable it to stand more securely. The fabric is a sandy orange colour on either side with the original grey colour still clearly visible in the centre of the cross-section. A fragment of a Roman Oxfordshire ware mortarium. The sherd comes from the rim of the vessel, which is straight with a downwards curving outer flange (Young 1977 Form M22.3). The fabric is hard, fine and light pink-buff coloured. The trituration grit on the interior surface is translucent pink, white and brown rounded quartz. A rim sherd from a mortarium of Roman date. It is wheelmade, formed from a sandy and mixed pink/brown fabric that has small gritty and larger quartz inclusions, possibly an Oxford ware or perhaps a local fabric. The sherd has an elaborate out-turned rim, folded over at the outer edge to give it an oval shaped section. The surfaces have a paler white/pink slip or wash, with larger quartz inclusions visible particularly on the interior surface that range in colour from white to pink.
