A small body sherd from Belamine jug, from the mid 16th-mid 17th century. The outer surface has an iron-rich brown surface which has been salt-glazed, which produces the mottled brown effect. The interior is a reddish pink colour. The fabric is hard fired and light grey in colour. There is a small piece of floral design visible on the sherd. The sherd is 37.75 mm high, 46.72.37mm wide and 8.02 mm in thickness. It weighs 22.4 grams. This style of jug was originally used to import alcohol / spirits from the continent (Germany and the low countries) and is named after Cardinal Bellarmine …

A base sherd from a German stoneware vessel, probably a jug or mug from Cologne or Frechen. It has a fine pale grey fabric with flat base and grooved decoration on the wall where it joins the base. The exterior surface has a speckled grey/brown salt glaze. Possible stacking and wire marks are visible on the surviving areas of the base. A rim sherd from a stoneware vessel with a hard pale grey fabric. Below the rim on the exterior surface is a single transverse groove, followed by a prominent flange. A slightly speckled brown salt glaze is apparent on the exterior, with a paler yellow/grey glaze on the interior surface. This fragment measures 42.76mm in length, 34.91mm in width, 4.04mm in thickness (at rim, 8.77mm a flange), and 9.63g in weight. This sherd is probably from the rim of a stoneware vessel of possible German manufacture, most plausibly from Cologne or Frechen. It is likely to date to the 16th-17th centur…

A sherd from a German Bartmann or Bellarmine stoneware jar dating c. 16th-17th century. The sherd is broadly sub-rectangular in plan view and comprises most of the moulded bearded face which adorned the neck of these ceramic vessels. The vessel has been manufactured on a wheel, evinced by the presence of prominent rilling marks on the inside surface, while the outer surface has been decorated with a speckled salt glaze which gives the sherd a mottled whitish brown appearance.

A sherd from the rim of an earthenware post-medieval vessel. It is wide and flat in form and would have sat at a right-angle to the wall of the vessel just below the rim, suggesting that it may have been from a large vessel like a pancheon. The fabric is hard and coarse with angular quartz (<2mm) and plentiful fine mica inclusions. Both surfaces are grey in colour with a few patches of orange in places.
