Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of cast copper alloy probable Roman harness pendant. What remains of the pendant is the transverse suspension loop set on an elongated neck and a portion of an openwork frame. The neck has a bead and reel moulding, in that the central portion is slightly globular, with a moulded collar above and below. Above the top moulding is the suspension loop. Beneath the lower moulding is the top of the open work frame. All that remains is one truncated curved shoulder of the frame. There is a peak to the centre of the top of the frame and if the other shoulder remained, this would give …

Cast copper alloy Roman decorative mount. The mount shows a crude bust of Mercury. The shoulders are shown draped. The face is moulded with incised lentoid eyes, raised ridges for the brows that join with a crude broad flat, nose with a short incised straight line for the mouth. The head appears to be moulded with curly hair though this may equally be the edge of the helmet. The helmet is otherwise plain. It has two wings extending at right angles to either side. Both of the wings are decorated with small circular indents. The reverse of the bust is plain.

Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete, cast copper alloy Roman figurine. This figurine takes the form of a classical nude male. The figure is standing and is truncated just above the ankle to the left leg and above the knee on the right. Both arms are truncated at the wrist but it is clear that the raised right hand is holding a club with a lion skin draped over the lowered left forearm, identifying this male figure as Hercules.
The head of the figure is shown with a moulded hairstyle that is more or less a band running around the brow and back of the skull, with grooved lines to indicate the locks. The v…

Workflow stage: Published
Copper alloy Roman pin head. The pin head is globular with only 4.08mm of the circular sectioned shaft surviving. It is much worn and no decoration, if present, survives on the pin head. The original surface is missing and exposed surfaces are light brown. There is no collar beneath the head, suggesting that the pin is Roman rather than Saxon in date. The over all length of the object is 11.56mm. The head is 8.4mm in diameter and the object weighs 2.28g.

Worn, lead spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is circular in plan and oval in section. It has a central circular perforation through its length. The object has been cast with a series of crude raised dots around the circumference of one surface and presumably the opposite surface, though this is worn beyond recognition. The lead has a chalky white appearance. The spindle whorl is 27.68mm in diameter, 13.02mm thick and weighs 58.95g. This spindle whorl could be Roman to medieval in date as decorated spindle whorls have been discovered in Roman, Saxon and Medieval contexts and there is no …

Incomplete cast copper alloy mid first century Romano-British brooch of Colchester-derivative Polden Hill (folded wings, Eastern Group) type. The wings of the brooch are complete and cylindrical. There is a deliberate slot to the rear of the cylinder, which we would expect to hold a spring mechanism, but this slot reveals the remains of a coiled spring partially surviving to one side. Otherwise the majority of the springhead is missing, as is the pin shaft. The ends of the wings are not capped. The front of the wings are decorated with a pair vertical grooved lines, placed at either s…

Worn silver Roman Republican denarius. Without any legends it is difficult to get an exact reference, however stylistically it is close to Crawford (RRC) 274 which would date to c 123 BC. However, it could fall anywhere between 144-116 BC in date.

Copper alloy fragment. This object represents a shaft of metal that is suboval in section, with a slight bend along its length so that it is almost C shaped in plan. One end has a moulded ,flattened globular section that is broken horizontally across. This is decorated on one side with two diagonally incised lines. This may be a terminal to the object, but could equally have been attached to something else. The other end is broken horizontally across the shaft. The object has an end to end diameter of 50.38mm, is 5.84mm wide across the shaft, is 5.06mm thick and weighs 12.94g. It has a…

Copper alloy head. This object takes the form of a bald and bearded man. The head is globular and extends downwards into an integral, sharply pointed beard, which is essentially a cone, giving it an over all teardrop shape. The figure is bald with a moulded raised band that runs around the back of the head, which presumably represents the remains of the hair. To either side of the head are integrally moulded ears that take the form of raised crescents. The eyes are slightly recessed and take the form of a lentoid with a central incised dot. These have been silvered. The nose is sub tri…

Fragment of copper alloy, Roman dolphin brooch. This fragment consists of the head of the brooch, with the side wings completely broken off, and the top of the bow. It is comma shaped when viewed side on. The remains of the head and bow are thick and semicircular in section. The bow has a raised central rib, flanked by a raised line to either side that run along the very edge of the bow. The reverse of the brooch is plain. Nothing survives of the wings or the spring. All breaks on the brooch are worn smooth, suggesting they occurred in antiquity. The original surface of the brooch surv…

2nd to 3rd century copper alloy Roman brooch. Hattatt describes this brooch as an oval brooch with intaglio, though the intaglio is missing from this example. The brooch is oval in plan, with a length of 26.24mm and a width of 21.01mm. It has a moulded, raised outer rim, 2mm wide, and a moulded raised inner oval rim, within which the missing intaglio would have been fixed. The inner oval rim is 4mm from the outer edge, is 2.08mm thick and has an internal length of 10.84mm and an internal width of 7.42mm. The brooch weighs 4.87g
The surface of the brooch shows minute traces of silverin…
