Description: A complete gold finger ring made of a flattened band engraved on the exterior with a French inscription in lower-case gothic or 'black-letter' script. The inscription begins with a small cross, and the words alternate with three very similar designs of a two-branched plant, one branch shorter and the other longer, each with thin leaves and ending in a feathery trefoil flower. The inscription reads en bon cuer (in good heart). There is also engraving on the interior of the hoop, made up of a single wheat stalk followed by what looks like two sets of initials separated b…

As RIC 8 no. 147, however the reverse type and particularly the lettering of the legend, which should read GLORIA REI PVBLICAE, suggest that this is an ancient copy rather than an official issue (R. A small gold sphere decorated with a single band of gold wire around the circumference. This has a line of arches of gold wire on both sides extending approximately halfway up each hemisphere. Above these arches are multiple small pellets covering the top and bottom of the sphere. At the top is a small loop formed from gold wire with a piece of bent gold wire through it, possibly the start of a chain or larger loop to enable the object to be attached to a chain. Bears some resemblance to Tudor dress pins but the fitting/ attachment loop suggests it might be a decorative dress accessory.

Description: A Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular form, seemingly complete, though distortion obscures most of the front face. The edges are lightly scalloped and the simple openwork decoration comprises a design based on small crescentic piercings. It is not possible to determine the form of the centre of the plate. The long tapered hook, also distorted, is fastened to the centre of a cruciform brace which is soldered to the back of the main plate. Discussion: The ear-ring is Allason-Jones Type 11 (Lindsay Allason-Jones Ear-rings in Roman Britain, Oxford 1989, p8). Ralph Jackson reco…

Small hammered circular piece, apparently a Merovingian continental tremissis, of 7mm diameter and 2.8mm thickness, plain on one face but struck on the other with the motif of a double cross, formed of a single vertical strokes with two crossing bars or, if viewed at 90 degrees, like an H with a single horizontal stroke and two vertical bars. Both tips of each bar are swollen into an irregular enlargement flat above but expanded at either side, somewhat like a heart-shape. Each stroke of the motif is approximately 4.2mm long suggesting that the die was formed by three strokes into the …

Gold disc pendant decorated with plain and beaded wire. The pendant is crumpled, with a bad tear to right of the loop and an empty central setting. A loose garnet cabochon was found associated with it. The face is edged with a single strand of beaded filigree wire and is divided into two registers which are separated by a second strand of wire, also beaded. Each register is divided into four by a broad cruciform motif springing from the central setting, with simple arcaded terminals, again formed from beaded filigree wire. The four fields of the outer register are filled by pairs of t…

Early-medieval continental enamelled gold mount from Suffolk (2004 T141) On a gold base is soldered a round box which holds in its field the enamelled decoration. The seam is covered by a filigree wire. The design is achieved by means of large cloisons (cells) made up of continuous ribbons of thin gold sheet, which hold the enamel. The visible upper surface of the cloison walls, economically, draws the design itself. This shows a male frontal bust (head and neck), with large almonds eyes and nose formed by one continuous strip curled on itself, a small mouth and ?moustache above.…

A medieval gold finger-ring, set with a green stone. The ring is distorted and measures 23mm across its greatest diameter. The hoop widens towards the bezel into which the stone is set and held with four claws. The stone has not been identified and may be glass paste. The shoulders are engraved with the stems of a flower against a cross-hatched ground possibly keyed to take enamel. A break at the shoulder reveals a cavity which suggests, along with the weight of the ring, that it is hollow.

A gold finger-ring, 18mm in external diameter and 15mm in internal diameter. The hoop has a circular cross-section and is likely to have been originally formed of beaded wire, this is still visible on the inside edge, but not on the outside edge due to wear. There are two gold globules on either shoulder, the setting is plain and oval in shape, it is 5mm in length, 3.5mm in width and 3.5mm in depth. The setting still contains some kind of probably organic material- perhaps coral. There was a similar gold finger-ring found as part of the Thetford treasure which is late fourth or …

Unusual type, another 8 recorded (Oxford index). Based on Gallo-Belgic D quarter stater (Van Arsdell 69) and Trophy type from Kent (Van A 145, 147); this seems to be an Essex/Suffolk version using bits from both designs. Date in 40's BC or thereabouts, comparable to other hoard items from this site.

Incomplete gold finger-ring, set with a colourless stone. The hoop is narrow and broken into two parts, with about a quarter missing. It is D-shaped in cross-section, flaring from a minimum of 1.2 mm wide and 1.4 mm thick to a maximum of 1.8 mm wide and 2 mm thick at the junction with the bezel. Although this would seem to leave little room for decoration on the shoulders, there is in fact a great deal of complicated scrolly engraving extending around half the hoop and ending with a short longitudinal groove. The bezel is 8.5 mm square, and tapers to a point underneath with a finely…
