Fragment of heavy corrugated cast staple handle(?) attachment, probably from bucket or cauldron, found within a hoard. Decorated externally with five heavy ribs/corrugations, plain internally. At the base of these ribs is the remains of a transverse internal socket. The top, broken end of the ribs, is very thin in places. All breaks are ancient. Medium brown/green patina with paler green corrosive encrustations. Appears to be a high lead casting. cf cast staples from cauldron in Llyn Fawr hoard & from bucket(?) in Hatfield Broad Oak hoard (Davies 1929 - BAR67, Fig 8.1)

A sherd from the body of an early Bronze Age vessel, dating to the period c.2350-c.1200 BC. Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.  With thanks to Carlotta Marchetto, Oxford Archaeology East for identification help.  Length: 30.16mm, w…

Copper-alloy socket fragment, perhaps from spear or gouge or chisel, etc. (too small and damaged to be able to be certain). Basically a cylinder of copper alloy, just over 2 mm thick, with ancient breaks and some crushing out of shape. Probable original diameter 12-13 mm, and possibly originally slightly tapering. A cast copper-alloy bronze 'moustache-like' object. This is a three-dimensional casting consisting of two, part decorated, drop-shaped parts on either side of a central constriction. The constricted area is masked by corrosive products including a large amount of rounded sand (from deposition horizon?). On other examples this constricted area has a central perforation so it is likely that this example also has a now obscured vertical perforation. The drop-shaped parts have elongated narrow tips with abrupt angular terminals, these may be incomplete but appear rounded so could be co…

There is a dark green patina underneath a dark grey surface. The markedly rounded edges, similar to those in the August 2000 finds from this hoard, make it look almost like a beach find. The wings were probably originally quite narrow, as edge bevels survive in two small areas. The midrib is rounded. Possible basal loops are suggested by spurs at the base of the wings, with gaps above. Complete bronze pegged spearhead, one item within a hoard. Socket end decorated with two groups of approximately parallel girth grooves, a pair near the socket, a gap and four more nearer the peg holes. The conical socket is deep and extends to near the tip, which is shortened through ware, use and/or resharpening. The wings are relatively short. Both are slightly bent (use damage?) and one has also been blunted where the very edge has been slightly turned sideways along and parallel to most of the edge (probably by running or clashing with another hard surface). The surface has extens…

Almost complete bronze pegged and decorated spearhead, one item within a hoard. Only end of tip missing but this may be recent damage - certainly badly corroded at this point. The socket is decorated with four pairs of cast ribs around the shaft. The junction of the socket is also decorated with a band of diagonal nicks. Deep cone shaped circular socket extends almost to tip. Small, plain wings with some slight recent damage to blade edges. Medium green patina with numerous small paler green corrosive encrustations.

A side looped (and pegged?) bronze spearhead, complete except for some minor loss at the socket. It has a very good surface condition although some recent (plough?) marks are visible on one face and on the blade edges and tip. The spearhead also bears extensive ancient relatively coarse abrasive cleaning grooves. The blade has cast edge bevels and a circular sectioned midrib. The loop plates are lozenge-shaped and there is an inset bevel at the socket mouth. This spearhead is a Rowlands (1976) group 1 side-looped type, although at present the loops are blocked and it is not clear if th…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1550-1250 BC. This example is of Davis' Group 6-'Developed side looped spearheads', probably belonging to the Acton Park or Taunton metalworking phases. The base of the socket is missing along with the edge of one blade wing, but otherwise the spearhead is preserved intact. The socket itself is circular sectioned and extends into the head of the spear for a short distance before becoming solid, retaining most of one socket-loop at its irregularly truncated end. The latter has a broadly lo…

An incomplete copper-alloy basal-looped spearhead of the Middle Bronze Age, dating to 1500 BC -1150 BC. The blade has a flame shape in plan and a lozenge-shaped cross-section, with a slightly rounded mid-rib ridge extending to the its tip. There is only one oval loop surviving out of the two which are incorporated into the base of the blade, one either side of the central rib. The mid-rib extends and expands to form the hollow circular-sectioned socket. Both edges of the blade are moderately worn and the surfaces are pitted. Symmetrically placed on the sides of the socket are two oval loops, which have an oval cross-sectioned frame. The blade/socket junction is 14.00 mm long and it takes a lozenge shaped cross-section; the blade survives for14.57 mm long and it is heavily damaged, only short fragments of the blade wings survive. Blade end of bronze socketed axehead. Very little original surface survives, with extensive surface loss and minor pitting due to corrosion. It appears to have been 'treated' with navy-blue shoe polish, which masks the coloration. One diagonal (plough?) scrape on one face. Slightly expanded crescentic cutting edge with some slight (ancient?) damage. No trace of external or internal ribs. Probably 'south-eastern' form of socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date. Surviving length 71.5 mm, blade width 41 mm, weight 121.28g.

The blade end of a bronze incomplete socketed axehead including part of the socket. This blade is quite narrow with straight expanding sides but is without obvious blade expansion. The cutting edge is rounded and blunt, though severely affected by corrosive pitting. There is a small casting void in the socket. The surface colour is mainly pale green due to invasive corrosion products, some areas do have better surface survival and are patinated darkbrown. This may be part of an Armorican socketed axe, also refered to as 'Breton axes', a type which are usually non-functional and may hav…
