A sherd from the body of an early Bronze Age vessel, dating to the period c.2350-c.1200 BC. Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.  With thanks to Carlotta Marchetto, Oxford Archaeology East for identification help.  Length: 30.16mm, w…

Description: A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end and the inner part of the socket survives. The fragment is rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards the blade. The blade edge curves outwards and is damaged in places with a notch to one side. Each side of the fragment flares outwards towards the blade and gently inwards towards the break. A slight casting seam can be seen running longitudinally along the centre of one side, but this has largely worn away on the other side. The break has a rounded, rectangular depression in the centre, which is all that…

Object type: ARM GUARD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete Early Bronze Age stone arm guard (bracer) dating to circa 2300-2100 BC. Broadly rectangular in plan in section it has polished bevelled edges. At either end are located central circular drilled apertures to enable fixing to the arm. The faces of the stone have been smoothed. One end is slightly wider than the other. Broadly linear striations on both faces are the result of the bow having snapped-back during firing. A very similar armguard was recovered from the Stonehenge Archer burial assemblage, radiocarbon dated to circa 2300 BC (Heath 2012: 122-123) whilst two were…

Five objects which are possibly part of a Late Bronze Age hoard. 1: A roughly wedge-shaped copper-alloy fragment of metal working waste with irregular but relatively angular faces. At least two of the edges appear snapped though all faces are heavily patinated dark greenish-brown. Dimensions; 37.8mm x 31mm x 12.5mm and 41g in weight. 2: A fragment of a copper-alloy socket with short stub of a loop surviving. A moulding seam is visible above and below the loop stub. The relatively small oval mouth diameter suggests that this is probably from a socketed chisel or mortising tool though i…

A cast copper-alloy bronze 'moustache-like' object. This is a three-dimensional casting consisting of two, part decorated, drop-shaped parts on either side of a central constriction. The constricted area is masked by corrosive products including a large amount of rounded sand (from deposition horizon?). On other examples this constricted area has a central perforation so it is likely that this example also has a now obscured vertical perforation. The drop-shaped parts have elongated narrow tips with abrupt angular terminals, these may be incomplete but appear rounded so could be co…

A very small and short copper-alloy Bronze Age awl. Measuring 33.2mm in length, 5mm in width at its widest point and 4.8mm in thickness, at its thickest point. It has a rectangular cross-section the four edges of this awl appear to be faceted. Both tips taper to a sharp point c1.1mm in thickness and c3.6mm in width. This awl is unusual due to its small size, which is presumably due to extreme wear and re-use sharpening.
