A fragment of a copper-alloy Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) strap end of Thomas Class E, Type 1 dating to the period c. AD 1000 - 1100. It would have comprised of an open-work design, but all that remains is the attachment end. The attachment plate retains three entrally positioned rivet holes. The front face is decorated with annulets arranged in lines hoirzontally and vertically. The strap end has a zoomorphic closed end in the form of an animal snout. There are crescentic eyes and large looped ears. The main body of the strap end has a billeted outer border, then inside that a plain border. The rectangular panel contains a Trewhiddle style beast. It is a composite strap end with a forked spacer.  The object has a U-shaped frame, with a lozengiform, collared acorn teminal - plano-convex in section - projecting from the outet edge. From the other end are the incomplete remains of two opposing rectangular-sectioned arms which formed the forked spacer. Several similar composite strap-ends with circular spacers can be seen in Egan' and Pritchard 1991, 140-1 dated to the late 13th to early 15th centuries, being most common in the 14th century.

An incomplete gilded copper-alloy strap end (single sheet folded widthways). At the outer end an in situ copper-alloy rivet attaches the plates together. The outer end of the reverse of the plate is missing. Trace of gilding can be seen in places on the surface. For a similar example see fig.12 in Egan and Pritchard (1991, p.24), who date this style from c.1275 - c.1450.

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy strap end. It is formed of a single sheet folded lengthways (Egan 1991: p24, fig12).  There is an in situ copper-alloy rivet at the terminal end. The terminal end is domed and the circular rivet sits centrally within the dome. The strap end then widens towards the broken attachment end.  Egan and Pritchard (1991, 24, fig.12) date this type to c.AD 1275-c.1450 based on excavated parallels from London.

A Medieval copper-alloy strap end dating to circa AD 1350-1450. The extant piece consists of one plate of a tongue-shaped strap end. Running along the outer edge is an incised groove. At the attachment end is a rivet hole in which a now missing rivet would have joined the plate to a second plate, creating a composite strap end. At the apex of the attachment end are two incised transverse grooves. Two median transverse grooves are position on the plate. Above, are three incised chevrons arranged in a linear fashion left to right. The reverse is plain.

It consists of an annular section with long bifurcated arms projecting to one side. A single worn acorn shaped knop projects from the lower edge of the annular section.  Egan and Pritchard (1991, 24, fig.12) suggest a c.AD 1270-1450 date range for this form of strap end. A probable Roman copper-alloy strap end dating to circa 43-410. It is sub-rectangular in plan and plano-convex in section. It tapers from a wide, flat attachment end which has two rounded knops forming a heart shape, into a moulded, bulbous terminal. The flat plate would probably have been, split at the end for attachment. The surfaces are highly abraded and worn with now decorative detail surviving. Similar examples are recorded under: NLM-8C4137; NMS-0EC486; NMS-B67D36; ASHM-4ABA41 and NMS-0EC486.

Rectangular in plan, the teriminal is pointed. At the attachment end, the the plates split, joined by an in situ copper-alloy rivet. An incomplete probable Early Medieval copper-alloy strap end dating to circa AD 750-1000. The extant piece consists of the the zoomorphic terminal and one plate. The other is missing. It is long and narrow, the top end has a single hole for attaching to a strap. Multiple cross grooving is apparent with some gilding or silvering in the grooves.  The lower terminal end has a moulded stylised horse head with projecting eyes and a rounded, three-lobed muzzle. An incomplete copper-alloy medieval strap end. A single sub-trapezoidal plate, slightly wider at its upper end with a trefoil shaped knop projecting from the lower edge. There is an in situ copper-alloy rivet through each end. It is bent at an angle across the centre. See Egan and Pritchard (1991, 131, no.606) for a similar example. An incomplete copper-alloy medieval strap end. Three piece with sheet spacer. Both outer plates have pointed lower ends. There are two in situ copper-alloy rivets holding the sections together. There is some damage to the upper end of one outer plate. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 24, fig.12) date this form to c.AD 1275-c.1450. Length: 27.22mm, width: 9.22mm, thickness: 2.48mm, weight: 2.18g

A complete Early Medieval copper-alloy strap end dating to circa AD 1000-1100. Sub rectangular in plan, it contains a split attachment end with narrow, triangular upper plate which tapers inwards into a narrow waist before flaring outwards into a five-lobed Ringerike terminal. The plate at the attachment end contains a single in situ rivet which connects the split plates. The front face of the plate at the attachment end is adorned with an incised perimeter border. A complete Medieval copper-alloy strap-end dating to circa 1350-1400. A two piece strap end, It is rectangular in plan with a small pointed knop at the terminal end. Two crircular rivets are situated at both the terminal and attachment end holding the plates together. One face is decorated at the attachment end with a transverse groove above which are two incised saltires. The strap end is similar to to Egan and Pritchard 1991: no 640. Length: 27.7mm; Width: 9.4mm; Thickness: 2.4mm; Weight: 2.51g.

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy strap end dating to AD 1300-1400. Broadly rectangular, the strap end consists of a thick sheet of copper-alloy which separates at the attachment end. An incomplete copper-alloy medieval strap end. It is formed from a single strip folded in two leaving a gap in the centre. One face is decorated with an engraved rocker-arm motif border. There are two in situ copper-alloy rivets through the outer corners. See a similar, but undecorated example from excavations in London (1991, 127, fig.83, no.583). A fragment of a copper-alloy early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) strap end. Only the terminal survives. This is sub-triangular in shape, heavily corroded with traces of zoomorphic decoration on the outer face. Small patches of niello inlay can be seen on the lower end of the outer face. Thomas (2003) Class A. Without further diagnostic details it is difficult to assign to a specific type, but styles with this type of terminal were primarily in use from the later 8th into the 10th century AD. An incomplete Early Medieval strap end dating to circa AD 800-1000. It is broadly trapezoidal in plan and is moulded into a zoomorphic design. The design contains two parallel ears, each with a double crescent groove. Below are two lentoid bulging eyes. At the point of the snout, the object terminates in ancient break. Between the eyes is a longitudinal raised panel of degraded niello with faint traces of silver wire scrolling evident. Thomas notes that the silver wire scrolling would have formed S-shapes.
