A gold finger ring of uncertain date. It has a plain circular band that is sub-circular in section with a flat inner edge. The inner edge has several indentations and pock marks, presumably caused during production, but apparently no maker's marks or hallmarks. The ring measures 17.36mm in internal diameter, 22.84mm in external diameter, and weighs 8.58g. This plain gold ring is a beach find from close to a known Roman site. It is therefore possible that it could date to any time from the Roman period onwards. It was found over 20 years ago and is a single stray find, it therefore doe…

A gold double-escudo coin, or 'cob', struck in a South American mint by Spanish authorities. The coin is heavily clipped to the extent that the legends are entirely missing. Gold finger ring possibly of medieval or post medieval date. Now bent measuring 22mm by 18mm externally and 18.5mm by 14.9mm internally. As this finger ring is so plain with no diagnostic features it is very difficult to date. Arabic gold dinar identified by Luke Treadwell. The coin is an Almohad half dinar of Abu Ya'qub Yusuf I (AH 558-80/AD 1163-84), struck in North Africa (the mint is not named) between 1168 and 1184. Abu Ya'qub Yusuf has the title 'amir al-mu'minin' on this coin, which dates it after AH 563/AD 1168. This type is described in Stephen Album's 'A Checklist of Islamic Coins' (no. 483) as 'relatively common', but the find has considerable historical interest of course. Mark Blackburn of the Fitzwilliam Museum has confirmed that the closest parallels to this coin were two gold dinars of Al…
