Length 18 mm, wires 0.8 by 0.3mm. The craftsmanship is poor for precious metal work. Reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Catherine Johns (British Museum) adds in her report: "A single decorative gold necklace link formed out of square-sectioned wire, which would have formed a spacer between glass or hardstone beads. Gold and garnet fragment, possibly half of a rather long biconical bead. A hollow cone in shape, it has a circumferential band of cloisonne garnets around both the wider and the narrower end, and four longitudinal bands of cloisonne garnets running between. The band around the wider end had perhaps eight rectangular garnets originally, set in cloisons (cells); three survive now and two of the cloisons are badly crushed. A strip of gold projecting from the edge of this crushed area may be part of the attachment to the other half of the bead, or part of a suspension loop if the object …

Originally at least 6.5 mm thick, its sides have two facets of uneven depth, both decorated with delicate engraved scrolled motifs. On the wider facet of the angle these motifs are in zigzag fields, and on the other facet they are confined within a narrow band which narrows further towards the apex of the heart or triangle. Gold quarter stater, of Hobbs's 'Central Eastern Gold Attributed to Addedomaros' type (Hobbs 1996, 2417-21). The only variation from the standard type is that there is a pellet-in-ring below the horse's tail, rather than the usual ring. Van Arsdell (1989, nos. 1623-1) catalogues the type as Trinovantian, Addedomaros second coinage, 37-33 BC, but his dates are notoriously over-precise and a range of mid to late first century BC is to be preferred. The coin is of reddish gold; the slightly convex obverse is a little worn but the concave reverse is very clear.

Gold finger-ring of 'stirrup-shaped' type, now in two pieces and with an empty setting. The hoop is a little uneven but in most places 2.5 mm wide and a very thin D-shape in cross-section. The hoop is now crushed out of shape and a small piece, opposite the bezel, has become detached. The bezel is tall and triangular in the classic 'stirrup' shape, and has a very tiny circular setting for a gem a little less than 2 mm in diameter. The base of the setting is keyed for adhesive, of which no traces survive. Medieval, probably 13th century.

The ends of the ring butt right up against each other and are joined by corrosion from the core. A copper-alloy core is suggested by green corrosion products in two places, both on the interior surface of the ring; behind the terminals, and where the gold sheath has cracked on the opposite side from the terminals. It is D-shaped in cross-section, flaring from a minimum of 1.2 mm wide and 1.4 mm thick to a maximum of 1.8 mm wide and 2 mm thick at the junction with the bezel. The hoop widens towards the bezel into which the stone is set and held with four claws. The stone has not been identified and may be glass paste. The shoulders are engraved with the stems of a flower against a cross-hatched ground possibly keyed to take enamel. A break at the shoulder reveals a cavity which suggests, along with the weight of the ring, that it is hollow.

An Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet setting, originally circular but now heavily damaged, with most cells empty; plus a separate garnet and foil. A now distorted quatrefoil int he centre preserves remains of a white inlay (scientific examination (see below) suggested that this is probably shell). The quatrefoil is encircled by four half-round, now empty cloisons. From these, stepped cells radiate outwards to the edge of the setting. Four of them still preserve their garnets. Due to the distortion of the object, the garnets have risen and partly tilted and on three of them it is thus possib…

Gold finger ring possibly of medieval or post medieval date. Now bent measuring 22mm by 18mm externally and 18.5mm by 14.9mm internally. As this finger ring is so plain with no diagnostic features it is very difficult to date. Consequently, due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, it can not be securely dated to pre-1706 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure act 1996.

Arabic gold dinar identified by Luke Treadwell. The coin is an Almohad half dinar of Abu Ya'qub Yusuf I (AH 558-80/AD 1163-84), struck in North Africa (the mint is not named) between 1168 and 1184. Abu Ya'qub Yusuf has the title 'amir al-mu'minin' on this coin, which dates it after AH 563/AD 1168. This type is described in Stephen Album's 'A Checklist of Islamic Coins' (no. 483) as 'relatively common', but the find has considerable historical interest of course. Mark Blackburn of the Fitzwilliam Museum has confirmed that the closest parallels to this coin were two gold dinars of Al…

Description: A gold probable finger ring now distorted, consisting of a slender twisted ribbon of gold with tiny flat-backed snake heads in low relief at the terminals. The rendering of the snake heads is reduced to a pattern of swellings, curves and lines. Discussion: This finger ring is probably of Catherine John's type Bii (Johns, 1997, 36, fig 9), being of penannular form with two confronted snakes head terminals. It is similar in style to over thirty examples from the Snettisham hoard. However, these are all in silver, indeed no published example in gold of type Bii could b…
