A rim sherd from a Roman greyware vessel. The rim of the vessel would have been c.10 cm in diameter originally. Probably a large jar and the sherd comes from just above where the body of the vessel would have flared outwards. The core is light grey, while both surfaces are dark grey with a lustrous sheen. The fabric is hard and coarse and is tempered with moderate amounts of fine, rounded quartz sand (<0.5mm)
Probably later Roman, 3rd to 4th century AD date.

A sherd from the handle of a meddieval coarseware vessel. The handle is sub-rectangular in cross-section with a raised longitudinal ridge along either side of its outer face. Between these ridges a crude cross has been scratched into the surface prior to firing and there are lines of dots along each edge. The handle is sizeable and probably came from a large jug. The fabric is hard and coarse and is tempered with poorly sorted rounded quartz (<2mm), most of which is quite fine and occasional larger fragments of white chalky material (<2mm). The core and margins are grey in colour…

Body sherd of Roman greyware pottery decorated, above or below a plain band, with two or more horizontal rows of 10mm-diameter annular impressions within each of which the surface has been irregularly raised to a peak in a manner which might be described as rustication. This suggests that the implement used to form the impressions was a flat surface with a raised circular projection rather than an open ring, and that the clay momentarily adhered to this surface as the tool was withdrawn. Weight 5g. Mid 1st - 2nd century.
