Record ID: SF-6176A6
Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A polished flint axehead with narrow butt and squared sides. All-over polish with only a few former flake scars present, mainly on butt butt half of axe. Polish is coarse apart from blade end where it is fine. The surface is a mixture of mid brown and grey, possibly partial peat staining. However, one side of the cutting edge has a series of unstained flakes removed at a later date, showing a mid grey flint. These flakes look like retouch but are possibly plough damage that occurred when the axe was buried at the base of the plough line in a sub-vertical position, relatively recently.…

Object type: DAGGER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Flint dagger, lozenge-shaped in plan and section, tapering towards a point at the distal end and a squared-off butt at the proximal end. The dagger is bifacially reworked and retouched using pressure flaking on all margins. The flint is a translucent grey-brown colour and was likely derived from a locally mined flint nodule. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:1. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar, but less symmetrical, example from Norfolk on page 60, Fig.5.35, and another on page 145, Fig.5.131, No.28, which dates from the Beaker period. Smith (1919) illustrates similar ex…

Object type: DISCOIDAL KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Flint discoidal knife, semi-circular in plan and lozenge-shaped in section, with a polished curved back to the blade, which is also slightly convex. The knife has been bifacially reworked and the blade edge retouched and then polished along with the back which may have been for hafting or hand-held. It was no doubt polished for decorative reasons as well as practical ones. The flint is an orangey-brown colour and was probably derived from a locally mined flint nodule. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example of a discoidal knife with a p…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. It is oval in shape, bifacially polished and narrows slightly towards the butt end. This is probably a fragment from the cutting end of a larger stone implement, the original butt end now missing due to old breaks. The cutting edges themselves are slightly chipped in places, perhaps deliberately although equally the result of post-depositional damage. They are relatively blunt and abraded, as are the faces of the axe, probably partly as a result of post-depositional wear and damage. At the butt end of the fragment are a series of…

A complete small worked flint chisel of Neolithic date. It is plano-convex in form and struck from a pale grey flint with some darker brown patches. It measures 105.94mm in length, 35.06mm in width (27.69mm in width at blade end), 22.76mm in thickness, and weighs 86.80g. This is a worked flint chisel dating to the Early Neolithic period, c.3,500-2,900 BC.

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete partly polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. It is of regular, quadrilateral form with fairly straight cutting edge, with one very slight chip, and sides narrowing to slight butt. There is polish with relatively deep abrasion grooves limited mainly to the cutting edge and partly to the sides. The central portion of the axe has notable areas of gloss wihtin the flake scars. this is possibly the residues of adhesive used to fix the axe to a handle, if this is the case this is a rare occurrance on axeheads. The surface is a varied medium brown in colour and there is a rece…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. All-over polish with traces of only the largest flake scars remaining. The blade edge is unusually blunt and rounded any cutting edge having been polished away. There are a number of recent linear (plough?) marks visible across the surface but with no significant damage to the surface. The flint is a reddish-brown in colour. It is 135mm in length, 59mm in width, 27mm in thickness and 280g in weight.

Object type: PROJECTILE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
This bi-facially worked piece is clearly incomplete and may have been an elongated oval or a leaf shape. The radial flaking is invasive but rather coarse and irregular, suggesting either poor knapping techniques or an unfinished task. If unfinished, it may be an arrowhead (or projectile head), or laurel leaf, which would be of earlier Neolithic date.
