County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object. This object consists of an curvilinear rectangular cross-sectioned shaft, measuring 32.3mm in length and 5.5mm in width and 6.6mm in thickness. Two longitudinal border grooves can be seen running along the edges of the outer face of the shaft. Such grooves may have also have existed on the other faces, these are however more worn and no decoration can be seen. One end of this shaft is incomplete due to an old break and the other is integral to a curvilinear flat roughly triangular shaped fragment, with old breaks on two of the three edg…

A copper-alloy unidentified object, it is circular in plan and slightly conical in shape, measuring 18mm in diameter and 11mm in thickness, at its centre which is its thickest point. There is a circular perforation through the centre of the object, measuring 4mm in diameter. On the back face this protrusion opens into a larger circular hole with a diameter of 8mm, it seems likely that this object was attached to another at this point. The front face of this object is decorated with a tripartite, most likely originally red, enameled design. JD Hill of the British Museum believes that t…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete cast copper-alloy object of unknown date and function. It is long and thin, and in excellent condition, with a very fresh break at one end and what appears to be an animal head at the other. At the broken end it is almost pentagonal in section, with four facetted faces and the fifth filled with a U-shaped groove. The apex of the pentagon has tiny transverse nicks and this forms the back of the animal's neck; the nicks may represent a mane. The grooved underside is almost flat, but the back of the neck is more steeply humped into a brow, with a conical ear or horn projec…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It is rectangular in cross-section, but otherwise hard to describe. There is one wider flatter end (16 x 3 mm), and then one long edge has a straight taper and the other is incurved. It becomes narrower and thicker, reaching 4.5 mm thick and 6 mm wide in the centre. The incurved edge continues its line, but gains a central longitudinal groove. The straight edge follows the line of the curved edge. The object continues to thicken to a maximum thickness of 10 mm, and the width increases to 9 mm; this almost square-section end has some poss…

Incomplete cast copper-alloy object, originally circular in section and 24 mm in diameter; 19 mm in surviving length. About half of the circumference is missing (old breaks). It is decorated on the external face with mouldings; from one end to the other, a convex moulding 2 mm wide, a convex moulding 4 mm wide, a concave moulding 4 mm wide, a convex moulding 2 mm wide and the remains of a broken convex moulding (old break). The object as it survives is thus asymmetric in its mouldings. It is also asymmetric in its other cross-section, tapering from 6 mm thick at one break to 3 mm th…

Cast copper-alloy object. Circular (16 mm diameter) and plano-convex (4 mm thick), it has a central circular perforation 4 mm in diameter with rounded corners at either end. The low rounded face is badly pitted and corroded. The matt pale green patina and chunky proportions would not be out of place in the Roman period, or earlier, but no close parallel has been found.
