An incomplete La Tene C Middle Iron Age copper-alloy brooch dating to circa 275-250 BC. The brooch is symmetrical. The head has two adjacent flat discoidal projections with central apertures, each of which is now broken. From here the rectangular-sectioned bow emerges. It has a V-shaped nick at the top and curves inwards at a right angle before reaching the central plate. On the reverse of the upper bow is an integrally cast D-shaped loop which contains an intact circular-sectioned bar with flat edges. Wrapped around the bar is the circular-sectioned pin which tapers into a point. The …

An incomplete Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy Birdlip brooch dating to circa AD 30-60. The extant piece consists of a portion of the head, and upper bow. The extant part of the head consists of a hollowed hollowed and open at the reverse which would have housed a now missing spring and pin. The external face of the head is decorated with a moulded median longitudinal ridge, with crescentic incised grooves running either side. The head rests upon an integrally cast broadly flat circular hood. At the junction of the bow and the hood is the moulded beak which curves in…

Late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy Colchester brooch of Mackreth’s (2011) type 2.a or 2.b (the standard British type with a catchplate pierced by fretwork or square holes). It is largely complete except for the catchplate, which survives only as a series of stubs between incomplete openwork voids, and the shaft of the pin, approximately a third of which is missing from the tip.
The head consists of a pair of short flat wings and an integral spring that emerges from between them on the lower side of the reverse. The spring coils up and around a separate axis bar three time…

An incomplete copper-alloy Iron Age to Roman brooch derived by the Rosette type, dating to AD 20-60. It consists of a circular plate, which seems to have a decorated foil of copper-alloy attached to its front face. This foil has a repoussé decoration consisting of a rim and a central motif. The rim has a plain line between two beaded lines, while the centre bears a circle with radiant grooves. Both the plate and the foil have a central perforation, through which a copper-alloy cone or domed stud was riveted. The back face of the plate has a double lug at the edge and a shallow ridge …

A complete copper alloy early Iron Age three-part La Tene 1Ba brooch. The head has a four coiled spring (one spring is actually the separate head of the pin) with an external chord. The coils are slightly smaller than would be typical on a La Tene 1A brooch, but still larger in size than those typically seen on 1C and 2A brooches. A separate thick copper alloy chord passes through the head, securing a separate copper alloy pin, which is simply coiled around it at one end. The bow is 5.72mm wide and 3.22mm thick, narrowing slightly at either end. It is gently curved in profile and its …

A complete cast copper-alloy La Tene I brooch of Adams type 1b, dating to the Early Iron Age, c. 450-300 BC. The brooch survives completely intact, though its pin and part of the spring is somewhat distorted in old damage. It demonstrates a four-coiled spring, the outer coils arching in a semicircle above the head before plunging to form the pin. The head expands into a broadly oval shaped body demonstrating raised decoration in the form of an inner hollow lenticular moulding. At the base of the body, the lower bow quickly tapers before flattening into an 'L' shaped forwar…
