Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete but distorted solid gold penannular ring dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1550-1150 BC. It is broadly oval in plan view and plano-convex in section, being formed of three 'D' sectioned bands which have been soldered together, though in places these are starting to come away from one another. The terminals are squared off, but now overlap due to damage.
Date: 1550-1150 BC
Dimensions: The external diameter of the penannular ring is 12.16mm, while the bands have a maximum width of 8.74mm and a maximum thickness of 1.33mm. It weighs 3.68g.
Discussion: Composite pen…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A sherd from the body of an early Bronze Age vessel, dating to the period c.2350-c.1200 BC. Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Description: A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end and the inner part of the socket survives. The fragment is rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards the blade. The blade edge curves outwards and is damaged in places with a notch to one side. Each side of the fragment flares outwards towards the blade and gently inwards towards the break. A slight casting seam can be seen running longitudinally along the centre of one side, but this has largely worn away on the other side. The break has a rounded, rectangular depression in the centre, which is all that…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Published
A copper-alloy fragment of a middle Bronze Age spear head, dating to 1500 BC - 1100 BC. It is the spear tip, which has an oval midrib cross-section and a hollow longitudinal internal channel. The blades have a pair of longitudinal ribs on both faces; they merge in the tip.The edges of the blades are worn.

Workflow stage: Published
A copper-alloy fragment of a Middle Bronze Age side-looped spearhead, dating to 1500 - 1200 BC. It consists of the socket and the lower part of the blade. The socket is damaged and incomplete, however an original oval cross-section can be confidently suggested. Symmetrically placed on the sides of the socket are two oval loops, which have an oval cross-sectioned frame. The blade/socket junction is 14.00 mm long and it takes a lozenge shaped cross-section; the blade survives for14.57 mm long and it is heavily damaged, only short fragments of the blade wings survive. The junction is dama…

Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete copper-alloy basal-looped spearhead of the Middle Bronze Age, dating to 1500 BC -1150 BC. The blade has a flame shape in plan and a lozenge-shaped cross-section, with a slightly rounded mid-rib ridge extending to the its tip. There is only one oval loop surviving out of the two which are incorporated into the base of the blade, one either side of the central rib. The mid-rib extends and expands to form the hollow circular-sectioned socket. Both edges of the blade are moderately worn and the surfaces are pitted.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1550-1250 BC. This example is of Davis' Group 6-'Developed side looped spearheads', probably belonging to the Acton Park or Taunton metalworking phases. The base of the socket is missing along with the edge of one blade wing, but otherwise the spearhead is preserved intact. The socket itself is circular sectioned and extends into the head of the spear for a short distance before becoming solid, retaining most of one socket-loop at its irregularly truncated end. The latter has a broadly lo…

A side looped (and pegged?) bronze spearhead, complete except for some minor loss at the socket. It has a very good surface condition although some recent (plough?) marks are visible on one face and on the blade edges and tip. The spearhead also bears extensive ancient relatively coarse abrasive cleaning grooves. The blade has cast edge bevels and a circular sectioned midrib. The loop plates are lozenge-shaped and there is an inset bevel at the socket mouth. This spearhead is a Rowlands (1976) group 1 side-looped type, although at present the loops are blocked and it is not clear if th…

Small copper-alloy side-looped spearhead or arrowhead. Most of the blade is missing, with a corroded and slightly worn break just above the socket; in addition, quite a bit of one face of the socket is missing just below the base of the blade. The side loops are small, and there is a rounded midrib to the blade. Deep brown patina with areas of pale green corrosion where damage (possibly recent) has occurred. Surviving length 61 mm, estimated original length c. 83-108 mm. Surviving width (probably only slightly less than the original width) 16 mm, external diameter at socket 15 mm, weig…

Copper-alloy basal-looped or pegged spearhead, very worn and corroded. The base of the socket and possible loops, plus the tip, are missing, along with much of the wings. The wings were probably originally quite narrow, as edge bevels survive in two small areas. The midrib is rounded. Possible basal loops are suggested by spurs at the base of the wings, with gaps above. Although it is possible that the base of originally solid unlooped wings have merely corroded away leaving these spurs, and that this is therefore a pegged spearhead, the long narrow form and concave channels beside the…
