A copper-alloy core of a contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Valentinian I, c.364-367 AD. Reverse: RESTITV-TOR REIP, Emperor standing facing holding labarum and Victory on a globe. This is an irregular copy of a siliqua with copper-alloy core, plated surfaces and irregular types. Reverse: The legend VOTIS/XXX/MVLTIS/XXXX (letter V's inverted) within a wreath. For reverse type, see RIC VIII, p. 223, nos. 253-4 Plated copies of siliquae or not uncommon, and it is also not uncommon for forgers to combine types of different emperors. This is a fine example.

A Roman silver siliqua (unclipped), contemporary copy of a coin of Valens, c.364-378 AD. Reverse: PAX RO-MANORVM, Emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum and (Victory on a globe). 'Antioch' mint prototype. The reverse type is normally associated with the inscription RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICAE (although without a seated captive to right), so the coin might be a loose copy of RIC IX, p. 273, no. 7a. The obverse legend D N VALE - NS P F AG is only recorded in RIC for a contemporary copy of a coin at Rome - RIC IX p. 118, 10dnote. Rosette-diademed busts are not uncommon at Ant…
