An incomplete copper-alloy object of Early Anglo-Saxon date, possibly a strap or belt fitting. Both ends are incompete due to old breaks. At one (attachment?) end there are the remains of three evenly spaced oval shaped lugs. The central of these three lugs survives intact and has a single oval aperture that demonstrates signs of use wear, the lugs to either side missing their outer edges due to old breaks. The front face of the plate is deeply recessed, creating prominent raised borders along the attachment(?) end and both sides, the border at the terminal(?) end curving to a central …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object of probable Roman date. It comprises a flat, rectangular plate that is perhaps incomplete at its attachment end. This has worn, incised decoration on the front face comprising a series of symmetrical scroll-shaped motifs that run the length of the face and have traces of an added white metal coating. The back face of the plate has a single central integral rivet mid way down its length, with the possible remains of additional rivets at the top corners, although this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. At its base there is a large,…

A cast copper-alloy strap union of later Iron Age date. It has an openwork plate that is figure-of-eight in form with opposing petal or trumpet shaped motifs at the centre. Each of the central motifs has a circular body with raised border that extends at the centre of the figure-of-eight to a semi-circular terminal or lobe with raised border on the outer edge only. This results in one semi-circular terminal pointing directly upwards and one directly downwards. At the centre of each motif is a circular recessed field with separately cast cylindrical rivet that pierced the plate, presum…

Description: A silver complete swivel of medieval date. It consists of a pair of loops, with an integral bolt on the smaller, oval-shaped loop fitting inside a hole in the straight bar of the larger D-shaped loop. The larger D-shaped loop also has a D-shaped section, there is a central circular hole, 2.73mm in diameter, through its straight bar. The loop has animal heads to either side of the bar. These heads have small crescent shaped ears, heavy brows and long snouts. These are undoubtedly examples of Romanesque art; this style of decoration is used in the 12th century but also c…
