Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete silver Roman finger ring. Part of the bezel, one shoulder and part of the hoop now survive. The bezel is rectangular and the shoulder is angular and tapers into the narrower hoop, which has a D-shaped section. Dimensions: 15.4mm in length, 10.6mm in maximum width. Discussion: This finger ring is possibly of Henig's type VIII (M. Henig, A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from the British Isles (BAR 8), Oxford 1978), due to its angular shoulders. The precious metal content of this object fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.

Description: A fragment of a silver finger ring of probable later medieval date. The hoop is curvilinear and rectangular in section and the outer face has widely spaced stylised lettering. The letters are engraved and seem to say [] I A Y [], the Y- shaped letter is placed horizontally rather than vertically on the hoop. Dimensions:The hoop is 23.17mm in length, 5.89mm in width, 2.01mm in thickness and 2.87g in weight. Discussion: No exact parallel could be found for the form of lettering on this finger ring but it seems most likely to be later medieval in date due to its style. T…

A gold finger ring of Medieval date. It has a simple undecorated wire hoop that expands at the shoulders and opposite the bezel narrows, perhaps partly due to use wear. The hoop is slightly misshapen and this appears to also be the result of usage rather than post-depositional damage. At the junction of hoop and bezel are prominent transverse rectangular ridges. The bezel itself is sub-rectangular in plan with two long tapering sides that have a short straight side at the base end and a wider, curved top end. In profile the bezel is sub-lozenge shaped with flattened base and top. The …

A silver gilt finger ring of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The ring consists of a flat hoop that is rectangular in section. On the exterior surface the band is decorated with a central cabled pattern that may once have run the entire circumference of the hoop although this is now uncertain due to extensive wear on the hoop opposite the bezel. Where the hoop joins the bezel is a sharply angled raised transverse ridge. The bezel itself is rectangular in plan with rounded edges, is sub-trapezoidal in profile and has a central rectangular recess that is now missing any trace of the gems…

A complete gold posy ring with thin, circular and D-shaped hoop. The exterior of the hoop is undecorated, but in places has been folded inwards due to damage in the ground. Inside the hoop is an incised inscription that reads 'Harbour a harmles [heart symbol]'. At the end of the inscription is a small stamped makers mark in the shape of an eight pointed star. The ring measures approximately 16mm in diameter (in current damaged state), the hoop is 0.70mm in thickness, and the ring weighs 1.11g. Similar examples of gold posy rings are frequently recorded on the PAS database and th…

A small fragment from an unidentified silver object, possibly a finger-ring. It is oval in section and at one end splits into two distinct bands that are also oval shaped in section, producing a very curved inner surface and an outer surface that is only slightly curved. At both ends the object terminates in old breaks. On the outer face there is moulded and incised decoration consisting of a flower or rosette with six petals, parallel vertical lines to the right, and the start of an unidentified decorative motif, possibly floral in nature, to the left. The curved inner surface has no …

A gold finger ring of Post-Medieval date. It has a plain hoop measuring 20.6mm in external diameter, 16.97mm in internal diameter, and the hoop width 5.5mm. It weighs 7.01g. There is an inscription on the inside of the hoop which reads:" As true to the as death to me ,". Judoe Rudoe, BM, notes that the inscription was in use by 1624 (recorded by Joan Evans) but there is no datable maker's mark, and the ring could be 17th or 18th century in date. The inscription is probably not a mourning one in the sense of commemorating a deceased person but rather a memento mori or reminder of death.

a complete gold Post-Medieval finger ring. The hoop is circular and D-shaped. It is a Posy ring and has two motifs, each repeated once on the opposite side of the hoop and separated by a pattern of three leaves on a stalk. The motifs are formed by incised line decoration and depict a) a lozenge-shape flanked by linked curved lines, one of which has a white metal infill and the other is plain; b)a pair of inter-linked hearts. The four leaf patterns between the four motifs have part green and part bronze-coloured infill. On the inside of the hoop there is an inscription which reads 'I …

A complete but distorted gold probable finger ring. Consisting of a simple hoop with a rectangular section. The outer face is smooth however in one area there are tiny traces of possible vertical grooves, these may be original decoration or due to damage/wear, they are extremely faint. Discussion: This finger ring is very undiagnostic and could possibly be Roman or later in date, but it is impossible to certify that it was deposited prior to 1708 as stipulated in the Treasure Act. Dimensions: Measuring 17.16mm by 15.33mm externally and 15.53mm by 13.61mm internally, the hoop is …
