Description: Silver probable finger ring fragment now bent with both ends incomplete due to old breaks. It is rectangular in cross-section with a slightly domed outer face, which is smooth and undecorated. The inner flat face has an inscription, which is neatly engraved in serifed capital letters, this inscription reads 'SARVE GOD ONLY,' the breaks are at either end of the text. Discussion: This finger ring is similar to another incomplete silver example from Brompton-by-Sandon, North Yorkshire (see Treasure Annual Report 2003, no 265, fig 265.3), this has a similar style of capital l…

A copper-alloy finger-ring, 20-21mm in diameter. It has a near-flat rectangular bezel which is 7mm broad and 12mm long, and two angled shoulders 5mm long and tapering towards the hoop itself. These areas have a flat upper surface, but the hoop itself is domed in section and tapers from 5.5mm just below the shoulders to 4mm wide opposite the bezel. The domed section is c.2.2mm thick. Although this might be Roman, it could also be much later. The original metal surface is lost through abrasion of the patina.

A complete gilded silver 13th-century finger ring of stirrup shape, measuring 23mm in length, 21mm in external diameter and 19mm in internal diameter. The bezel area is only slightly wider than the hoop and has a rectangular setting, which is now empty except for a white cement which would have held a gem or stone of some sort originally.

An incomplete jet or shale possible finger ring. Roughly half of this possible finger ring now survives due to old breaks. This surviving half itself is in two parts, due to a recent glassy looking break. From the surviving part of the ring it is clear that the external diameter is c31mm and the internal diameter is c20.6mm. The cross-section is roughly triangular with a flat circumferencial ridge around the outer face where the third point of a triangle would be. This object is possibly a Roman finger ring, especially as it was found in the plough soil in an area whi…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman finger ring. Only the bezel and the shoulders of the hoop of this finger ring now survive; the rest is missing due to old breaks. It measures 20mm in surviving length and the shoulders are fairly straight probably due to damage after deposition into the archaeological record. The shoulders of the hoop are rectangualr in shape, 4mm in width and are waisted before they join onto the bezel. The bezel is circular in shape and hollow, 6mm in diameter and 4mm thick. The original setting from within the bezel is missing. However, the remains …

A finger ring examined under the Treasure Act by the British Museum. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ring of 50% and silver content of approximately 47%; it weighs 4.78 grams. The ring has a flat, ovoid bezel drawn out at the shoulders into two narrow, wiry strips tapering to points, which were originally wound together to form the hoop, but are now separated; diameter of bezel, 20 mm (max). The decoration of the bezel appears to have been cast (rather than punched as would be usual on Viking-period rings) and consis…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman finger ring. Only the bezel and part of one shoulder of this finger ring survives, the rest is missing due to old breaks, now worn. The finger ring measures 15.3mm in surviving length and the shoulder fragment is rectangular in shape and 9mm wide whilst the bezel is roughly circular measuring 10.6mm in diameter. The bezel has the remains of what was probably originally an intaglio within it, probably made of a dark blue glass, although what is being depicted is no longer clear due to extensive wear and damage. This finger ring is similar to…

A complete copper-alloy finger ring. This finger ring consists of a plain hoop which is rectangular in cross-section and measures 16.8mm in external diameter and 14mm in internal diameter. One half of the hoop is thinner than the other, implying that although there is no bezel as such the wider half of the hoop is its front, especially as it is only on this half of the hoop can any decoration be seen. It is here decorated with small almost vertical grooves. This finger ring is difficult to date as it is so plain, however, it is similar to a Roman copper-alloy finger ring discovered …

A fragment of a copper-alloy probable finger ring. Part of the hoop and part of the bezel of this probable finger ring survive, the rest is missing due to old breaks. The fragment is curvilinear, 11mm in width and flaring in height from 8.4mm, at the hoop, to 14.5mm at the bezel. The front face is decorated with two parallel ring and dot motifs, the traces of another lower ring and dot motif, at the incomplete edge of the bezel end of this fragment can also be seen. This probable finger ring fragment is similar in style and shape to a complete copper-alloy finger ring with ri…
