An incomplete copper-alloy Roman hairpin, probably of Cool, Group 1 sub-group E (Cool, 1990, 151, fig 1, no 2, 6). It is of Group 1 as these pins have simple knob heads, this example has a conical head, but can be further classified as sub-group E as the shaft has an expansion part of the way down. Sub-group E shows a concentration in East Anglia, so Cool suggests that pins with expanded shanks could have been the fashion in that area. The terminal of this example is missing due to an old break and the expansion begins half way down the shaft. The conical head measures 4.89mm …

An incomplete copper-alloy probable Roman pin. It is 54.89mm long, and bent and flattened at the point which is incomplete. The shaft is 2.3mm thick. There is moulded decoration in the form of seven grooves and ridges at the terminal which broadens out and is 4.78mm wide. The pin weighs 2.71g. The moulded decoration and the narrowness of the shaft are reminiscent of the central part of an L-shaped tumbler-lock lift key, however this would be a small and insubstantial example if so. It is also possible that this is the shaft from a toilet spoon, with the scoop broken off.

An incomplete copper alloy Roman pin of Cool's group 6 (Cool 1990 157, fig 5:3, no 8). It is c.37mm in total length. The head is biconical and measures 7mm in diameter. Below the head there are three circumferential grooves at the top of the shaft producing two cordons. The shaft is incomplete due to an old break and has an oval cross-section, measuring c3mm in diameter. Cool believes that pins of this type belong to the second half of the 1st century and the early 2nd century. This is a large group and concentrates noticiably in Eastern England.
