A copper-alloy core of a contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Valentinian I, c.364-367 AD. Reverse: RESTITV-TOR REIP, Emperor standing facing holding labarum and Victory on a globe. Traces of an added white metal coating are visible on all surfaces. This coin appears to copy RIC IX no. 7a. Nummi were struck of this type, but they have an officina letter after ANT for the mintmark (c.f. RIC 11a) Comparison of the style of the coin with siliquae and nummi in the British Museum collection suggests the coin is a contemporary copy, probably made in the West. It is interesting to note …

A Roman silver siliqua (unclipped), contemporary copy of a coin of Valens, c.364-378 AD. Reverse: PAX RO-MANORVM, Emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum and (Victory on a globe). 'Antioch' mint prototype. The reverse type is normally associated with the inscription RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICAE (although without a seated captive to right), so the coin might be a loose copy of RIC IX, p. 273, no. 7a. A copper-alloy Roman nummus of Julian (AD 355-363), dating to the period c.AD 363 (Reece period 18). SECVRITAS REI PVB reverse type depicting a Bull standing right, two stars above. Mint of Antioch. cf. RIC VIII, p. 532, no. 216ff. Ae1 size, corroded and abraded edge, patches of corrosion. It is unusual to find bronze coins of Julian in Suffolk.
