A cast copper-alloy buckle frame which could be Roman or early medieval in date for which no published parallel could be found. The frame is oval in shape and measures 37.05mm in width by 21.53mm in length. It is difficult to see how this frame would have functioned, the sides and one edge have a D-shaped in section (a flat back face and rounded front face) but the other possibly inner edge has a rectangular flattened part with two small transverse grooves across the centre of its edge. This edge is worn and slightly uneven, so possibly it has been modified and could perhaps have ev…

an incomplete copper alloy Roman buckle plate, of 4th-5th century date. The attachment edge survives, but none of the other sides are intact. It measures 17.51mm in length and is 27.79mm in width, weighing 5.25g. There are three loops on the inner edge, through which the bar of the frame would have passed, and a fourth loop may be missing. The loop at one terminal is wider than the other two, and has four lines of moulded decoration going around it, and the next two loops have three lines and two lines respectively. The buckle plate has an openwork pattern of decoration, consisting of…

A copper alloy complete buckle frame of late Roman date. This buckle is of Hawkes and Dunning type IB and are normally associated with the military (Hawkes and Dunning 1961, fig 15, a-m). The frame is D-shaped with a straight slightly narrowed bar. The back face is flat and the front face rounded. The front face is decorated and it can be seen that the curved edges of the buckle frame are formed from the flattened bodies of two confronted dolphins, which are now very stylised and decorated with tiny wavy lines, the crests of the dolphins have been developed into outwards facing ho…

Cast copper-alloy buckle fragment of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA. Frame in the form of two confronted dolphin's heads with crests decorated with obliquely angled ribbing, both having gaping jaws which bite a centrally placed oval element. Worn, corroded. Loop broken away below dolphin's necks; as Hawkes & Dunning, 52, fig. 17i. These buckles are made in the late Roman period but certainly continue in use well into the 5th century.

Fragment of an openwork buckle-plate; curving in profile, metal corroded, approx. half missing; central openwork section enclosed by a lower cross-bar with two basal knops at either end, decorated by two parallel transverse grooves on its upper surface, on the other side are the remains of another transverse bar with a curving rectangular flange which (with the other missing example) would have enclosed the inner edge of the buckle frame; the mid section is decorated by row of 4 identical openwork piercings (2 now missing); each of the piercings has a rectangular lower and circular upp…

Copper-alloy buckle; C-shaped frame with scrolled terminals joined by a short horizontal bar which is enclosed by the loop of the copper-alloy pin. Below each of the scrolled terminals is a lug for attachment to the buckle plate which is now missing. The outer edges of the frame are elaborated to depict a pair of confronted animal heads while the upper surface in the vicinity of the pin has a series of parallel grooves. This is a member of a well known series of Late Roman belt fitting often associated with the army. Photos and drawing created by the finder.

Buckle frame with zoomorphic decoration, of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type 1B. In poor condition and unfinished, it is D-shaped with a straight bar on which a slightly off-centre casting sprue survives; casting flashes are visible around the edge of the buckle. The outer edge is formed by two face-to-face dolphins' heads, each with a ring-and-dot eye and open jaw, with a lozengiform moulding in between. On top of the dolphins' heads, the crests have developed into back-to-back horses' heads. These are more fragmentary but again each horse has a ring-and-dot eye. Only one face of the f…

Unusual form of copper-alloy buckle, now incomplete. The frame is largely missing, but the surviving stubs of arms show them to have been curved; the frame was probably originally oval and could have held a strap of at least 30 mm wide. There is an integral plate with a deep pin slot; the pin bar is set at the far end of this slot, and on it a copper-alloy pin of a different, more greenish metal survives. The pin is as wide as the slot until it emerges into the frame; it then narrows in a step, and gently tapers to a point. Both the frame and the plate are substantial, at 4 mm thi…

Copper-alloy cast buckle frame and plate, the latter incomplete due to an old break. The frame is 34mm long and 17mm wide; it is flat and 2.5mm thick. The outer edge is incurved to produce a concave M shape; the inner curve of the frame then steps out to the junction with the plate, where the edge is straight. The frame has been cast in one with the plate; a worn circular perforation is present near to the inner edge of the frame, which would have held the pin. To either side of the pin hole is a smaller rivet hole, one now broken through; there is also a broken central perforation, p…

Copper alloy buckle fragment. The loop has opposed stylized dolphin heads with a single rib across the necks and no crests; the surface is corroded but no trace of eyes are visible. The back is flat. It is broken at the points where on a Type IA the loop would meet the straight bar - or (perhaps less likely) on a type IIA the tails would coil round with attached hinge loops below. Width 31mm, surviving length 18mm. These buckles are associated with military and official wear in the late Roman period and beyond.
